BALER: LOVE AT FIRST WAVE
When I first saw the waves of Baler, it was love at first sight! The waves are long and quite muffled, yet gracefully dancing along the wind.
Last February 2014, my friends asked me to join them in a trip to Baler. I hesitated at first since I don't have a budget allotted for travelling. But, my friends were so persistent and I eventually agreed to go. So yeah, rock on! I only spent 1,100php for an overnight stay in Baler, I'll breakdown the expenses of my trip on the latter part of my blog.
Because we wanted to save money for this trip, 2 hours before our departure we bought groceries inclusive of Meat for barbecuing, hot dogs, junk foods, fruits, bottled water and liquor (hihihi). We decided to rent a van and a driver since it's cheaper and less hassle. We hit the road around 1:30pm on a Saturday to avoid rush hour and traffic!
Road tripping with these people is, I guess, the most special part of this trip since we were able to bond and get along more with each other through jamming to EDM Music, and of course eating! It doesn't feel like a 7 hour drive at all when you're with great companions!
We arrived at Baler, Aurora around 8:30pm and because we already made a reservation at Desiree's lodge and transient house, we didn't experience the hassle of looking for a place to stay. Desiree's is located at Buton St., Brgy. Sabang, Baler, Aurora. That street is like a little surfer's paradise, people there has their own unique way of living and has a deep passion towards surfing. Go, see it for your self! :)
We stayed in a super big room with 5 beds that can fit in 9 people! (Yes, you read it right. 9 people! Those people are us, by the way. Because we believe in the saying: "If there's a will, there's a way" Haha! ) Just figure out how did we do that. Haha!
For dinner, we grilled the pork and hot dogs we bought at a supermarket in Makati. After we indulged our stomach with those meats, the party started! (Charot!) What is having a vacation without inumansession? You know what I mean. :) I won't discuss the things happened that night further, let's leave it in our memories. Hihi.
We woke up early the next day and had our breakfast at Yellow Fin Bar and Grill. The food was superb, and not too pricey!
After we charged our body with some rice and meat, we're ready for our surfing session! The beach is just beside the street where we stayed, so it took us only 1 minute to get there!
As soon as we arrived at the beach, we excitedly rent a surf board and an instructor to teach us the basics of surfing.
It was my 1st time in Baler to try this water sport, I was afraid to try it before because of the notion I have in mind; If you don't know how to swim, don't surf! Until I met the waves of Baler and busted my own myth. Surfing is for all, even to those who don't know how to swim. Baler is perfect for 1st timers, the sea is not too deep and the waves are perfect for beginners. My first wave is like love at first sight, I effortlessly fell in love with the waves and it loved me back. It was a profound experience being one with the ocean, the wind, and the sky. It's the best feeling ever! I encourage you to try surfing :) I got addicted to it and I have been surfing for almost a year now.
Here's my surfing tips for beginners:
1. Make sure you eat at least 30 minutes before hitting the ocean.
2. Bring drinking water, surfing is a little exhausting and you'll need to re hydrate your body with water after surfing.
3. Wear a proper swimming attire! (Rash guard, board shorts)
4. Do some warm up exercise.
5. Hire an instructor to teach you the basics of surfing, focus and practice your balance.
6. When you're already in the ocean, patiently wait for the right wave, you will feel it when you're there. :)
7. Relax and let the waves cradle you.
We finished surfing at lunch time and we had so much fun!!! Especially me! Haha! After we ate our lunch, we decided to leave Brgy. Sabang, but before we left I had a chance to play with my penny board in the secret spot that I saw! (Find it) Hihi! Clue: It's just in front of the store in this picture :)
We left Brgy. Sabang early so we can still visit the famous Ermita hill. This is a must see place when you're in Baler because it will give you the breathtaking bird's eye view of this majestic place.
On our way to Ermita Hill, we saw approximately 10 falls just beside the road facing the ocean! How awesome is this place! And since we haven't taken our bath yet (haha) we decided to soak in the cold yet gentle water of one of the falls we saw.
While waiting for my friends to finish they're bath, I sat on this big rock and relish the beauty of this place. Oh, I wish I could stay :(
After the exhausting yet blissful adventure we had at the Ermita hill, the hardest part came; leaving Baler :( An overnight stay is not enough to fully discover the wonders of this place, and I must warn you, once you've visited Baler, it will haunt you by its glorious beauty once you left.
