         eyes quickly lowered, embarrassment written all over smooth features. of course, comparing myself with dr. watson was a stupid idea. hands folded in front of him only to start fidgeting with white shirt sleeves. upon hearing an unusual compliment from the man himself, sichan was struck by a sensation of awe. a split second later he remembered the context around the uttered niceties. clearing his throat, sichan shook his head. ❝  no. i don’t want to kill anyone.  ❞ not even my enemies, but that happens anyway because my will to live is stronger. at the moment. a brown gaze fixated on cognac-coloured shoes  ❝ i’d rather stay in my miserable job than do anything of the sort you propose. ❞ testing the boundaries, sichan quickly changed the subject in feeble hopes yeo wouldn’t notice. ❝ i don’t want to remember such terrors, i couldn’t live with myself—  ❞ a shake of his head stopped him from continuing the sentence and if he didn’t utter his thoughts he could hide them away and pretend the past never happened.  ❝  how do you cope with people dying?  ❞

         ❝ YOU CAN’T KILL WHAT IS ALREADY DEAD, but I digress. ❞  His reaction didn't come as a surprise; rather, he was playing along just as expected — a PITY, really. Oh, the king could think of plenty of reasons that might convince him to acquiesce, but they stayed stuck to his tongue  ( for now ).  ❝ I could always brew you some AMNESIA-INDUCING tea, but it doesn't seem like you'd be very willing to compensate me for my... GENEROSITY, ❞  murmured lowly, as if spilling a secret,  ❝ Besides, you'd BREAK Doryeong's heart if you took such a route — Wouldn't want to do THAT, now would you? ❞  

         Yeomra snorted when the mortal's inquiry reached his ears: 'how do you cope with people dying?'  If anything deserved a LAUGH, it was this, and thus a deep guffaw rumbled in his throat.  ❝ I choose when and how people die, and what happens to them when they're brought to my realm; if I needed to cope, someone ELSE would be doing my job. Do you understand? ❞  Mid-conversation, he ushered Sichan along in the direction of a nearby café  ( perhaps he could use a hot meal to ease his woes, not that the god CARED about his former underling’s emotional well-being, of course ).

                                 DONNING THE GUISE OF A MERE MORTAL,   hwanin embraced his personal mission with utmost discretion while seated on some popular internet café. with hardly any divine residue left on him to register,  gaze  managed  to  occasionally  wander  over  at the chthonic youth burying vexed features into that endless pile of homework. as bitter years had passed ( though times were still driven by an underlying tension ), the desire to at least see the underworld heir in the flesh had grown intolerable for the heavenly emperor. not so surprisingly, his unique aura could have been sensed blocks away — and as much as he physically represented his father, hwanin recognized ki in him too.   ❛  the amount of work they make adolescents endure these days; it’s frustrating to even bear witness.  ❜   lowering his newspaper out of subtle sympathy, the suited man nodded at deokwon’s assignment of focus.        ❛  is that geography? i happen to be a self-declared expert in the field.  ❜  how could he not be when his throne crowned the highest of skies?

         WAS THIS SOME KIND OF MIRACLE FROM HEAVEN?  ( Oh, if only he knew... )  Any excuse to take a break from grueling coursework and a chance to rest his tired eyes was thoroughly welcomed, even if it meant having to converse with a STRANGER of the mortal variety; as the Jade Emperor had probably expected and hoped for, Deokwon couldn't sense DIVINITY beneath the surface of his earthly guise — it was hidden far too well for a young deity still studying the godly arts.  ❝ Yeah... my professor told us to identity as many of Japan's islands as possible, from memory, but there's over SIX THOUSAND and I only know about two hundred off the top of my head, ❞  a pitiful number, he thought,  ❝ Seems... pointless. ❞  Today was one of those days where he'd rather be translating UNDERWORLD scrolls into modern language.  ❝ You wouldn't happen to be a self-declared expert on THAT in particular, would you, ajusshi? ❞

         THE LACK OF EFFORT ON HER KING’S PART SPOKE VOLUMES; such audacity, sending someone of much lower rank instead of one of the Yama  ( surely they weren't ALL busy dealing with those who'd perished in the mentioned catastrophes?  Like Pingdeng, for example — If he had even ONE soul to punish in Avīci, it would be a surprise ).  ❝ He's lucky that I'm so AGREEABLE, ❞  his own way of joking, though the delivery was dry and deadpan,  ❝ Otherwise, I'd send you back and demand that he come himself. ❞  Once a yawn was stifled, Yeomra waved the goddess closer; if she continued to stand there, FROZEN like a statue, his patience would undoubtedly plummet into the void.  ❝ Well then, what news do you bring, aside from his excuses?  I'm sure you'd like to get this over with SOONER than later, so let's do so. ❞

         AS LONG AS SHE GAVE HIM THE RESPECT he rightfully deserved, he would see to it that the shaman’s time in this cold, gloomy realm was tolerable  ( versus the MISERABLE reality he had in store for her, should she do otherwise ).  It pleased him to no end to finally have someone speak to him without ABHORRENCE coating every word; Yeomra couldn’t recall such treatment from any other being alive — or dead. When everyone thinks you’re the most horrid, DETESTABLE person to ever exist, it’s hard not to live up to their expectations.

         ❝ Urgent?  No, not quite, ❞  he mused, sifting through countless pieces of parchment with haste, in search of one in particular,  ❝ However, there is something I’ve been meaning to investigate PERSONALLY — I would usually ask Gangnim to accompany me, but your expertise might prove to be more useful. ❞  Dark eyes raised from ancient text and settled on the princess’ fair visage, his brow quirked,  ❝ If you’d be willing, that is. ❞  Not that he couldn’t FORCE her to tag along, if he so desired.
