Yes, it is fun because you can break the system easily and start over again. But you will learn from that failure.
Yocto Project will be a nice project to look at if you need a customized Embedded Linux.

ls -lct /etc | tail -1 | awk '{print $6, $7}'
This will print the installation data and time of your installation of Linux Mint.
