A while back, I started looking for a roommate because bills started to kick my ass and between my job at Walmart and my internship, I was really struggling to make it. It was getting hard to pay for my rent and other expenses on the side. I was tired of having to cut deals with my landlord and beg my parents for money whenever I came up short for rent. After being late for July’s rent, my father cursed me out, insisting that I needed to stop being prideful and find a roommate. I had a two-bedroom apartment, so I had the space. Truthfully, I just didn’t see myself living with anyone unless I was fucking them.
I’d been lucky to have been able to somehow live alone my sophomore and junior year but it was proving to be too challenging as I entered my Senior year. I just couldn’t take any more hours at work without sacrificing my academics and I was the president of my fraternity (Phi Beta Sigma) on campus, so I just chose to get a roommate.
I wasn’t excited about the idea of having a roommate. Outside of when I was pledging, I hadn’t shared a room or apartment since my freshman year of college and I enjoyed having my privacy. I enjoyed not having to answer to anyone and I enjoyed being able to bring guys home without having to question if a roommate would be comfortable with me doing so. Now, I realized that I may not have the luxury of complete privacy.
The semester was already well underway, so I knew that finding someone would be a challenge. I initially searched for possible roommates amongst my fraternity brothers, but the rest of my chapter brothers had already secured roommates and to be honest, I was okay with that. I was out to my chapter, but I wasn’t looking to have them in my sex/love life.asking any of them them was out of the question.
My next option was to ask my friends to see if they knew anyone cool that was still looking for a place to live. At the next campus General Body meeting for NPHC (the council that houses all of the Divine Nine organizations), I waited until the end of the meeting to ask if anyone was looking for a roommate and one of my homies and past hook-ups Quan (the President of Kappa Alpha Psi) pulled me aside.
“Hey Desean, how soon are you looking for someone to move in?” Quan asked me as the rest of the people in the room mingled.
“Man, as soon as possible bro. You know anyone?” I asked him.
“Actually, I do. My neo Allen is looking for needs to be in a new spot by next week. He’s been striking out since he needs a roommate to keep costs down.” Quan said. I instantly knew who he was talking about.
Allen had just crossed into Kappa this past Spring and he was well liked around campus. He was the former president of the Black Student Union and he’d just come out as bisexual over the summer. I didn’t know him personally, but I followed him on social media since we were both Fraternity men on our campus so I had some respect for him. Plus, he was easy on the eyes, so that helped. The thought of sharing personal space with his fine ass instantly got me excited.
“That’s perfect, because I definitely need to cut costs too. Can you put me in touch with him?” I immediately responded, not wanting to seem too ‘excited’.
“If you want, I can shoot you his number and you can reach out to him?” Quan asked, instantly making me feel like there was some hope.
“That would be perfect.” I said to myself. Finally, I was about to make some progress with my roommate search.
“Hey…let me talk to you in private really quick.” Quan said, leading me outside of the meeting room.
“What’s good man?” I asked him.
Quan looked around (checking for any possible eavesdroppers) before speaking. “Listen, you know Allen gets down, right?”
I smirked. “Quan, I get down myself, why would that be an issue?” I asked him. Quan looked around again before speaking.
“Listen. You know how this shit goes, we all have a reputation to maintain. The frat doesn’t care about his sexuality but as his Dean of Pledges, I care about his image. If he becomes your roommate, look out for him. Don’t let him be bringing back random niggas back to your place left and right because if word gets out and people talk about him, it’ll reflect poorly on the chapter and we don’t want that.” Quan said, folding his arms.
“Why should Allen’s actions any of my concerns?” I thought to myself as I thought about what he said. I tried to be respectful with my follow-up.
“Quan, I hear you, but that man is grown. I haven’t even approached him about moving in together and you’re asking me to make sure he’s not fucking anyone? How do you even know that this is something that you should be concerned with?” I replied. Quan took a second to think about what I said before replying.
“You know what? You’re right. I don’t know much about his sex life but I was just coming to you as a homie because I want to look out for my neo. I won’t trip though, I’m going to trust that he’ll make smart decisions, whether y’all room together or not.” Quan said, which made me smile.
“That’s more like it. Let’s just hope he agrees to be my roommate though because I’m getting desperate and I don’t want to look for a roommate on Craigslist.” I joked.
“Man, whatever. You just want him to move in with him so you can add him to your ‘list’. We both know you’re a hoe.” Quan joked. I rolled my eyes, as the thought of possibly fucking with Allen hadn’t seriously crossed my mind…until that moment.
“No, actually I wasn’t even on that. I’m tired of barely being able to pay my bills but if Allen wants to hop on this dick, it would definitely be an added bonus.” I joked, instantly pissing Quan off.
“You better fucking not What, you want to fuck him and ghost him afterwards like how you did me?” Quan instantly said, getting upset.
I laughed, trying to calm him down. Quan and I had a weird, sordid history and we’d just gotten back on good terms. He had a slight jealous streak and I knew better than to upset him in this moment.
“Chill, Quan! I was joking. Can you send me his number though, seriously”? I asked as I thought about how awkward it would be to fuck with someone that I was looking to room with.
“Man, whatever…I’m serious, don’t fuck with him, Desean.” Quan said as he pulled out his iPhone and sent me Allen’s number via airdrop.
“I can’t make any promises, but thank you, bro!” I said, running off before he could reply.
That same evening, I called Allen and we had a quick conversation. He’d just gotten fired from his job as a Resident Assistant and he had to be moved out of his residence hall by the end of the next week. Due to the urgent nature of his situation, he was seemed completely on board with moving off. I was excited to have someone interested but I wanted to make sure we’d vibe well and that he liked the space so I invited him over the next night at 8PM to check out my apartment before we made things official.
I spent the next day cleaning up my apartment, making sure that it was spotless ahead of Allen’s visit. I wasn’t necessarily a slob by any means but my apartment had become a. bachelor’s pad so I needed to make it as ‘move-in ready’ as possible in case he really liked it.
I paid special attention to the extra room, cleaning it from top to bottom. It’d largely served as a storage space and a second walk in closet for me. If Allen decided to move in, I knew that I’d have to find another space to store my shoes. Still, I couldn’t focus on that – I needed him to like this spot.
As it was almost time for him to arrive, I took a quick shower and I threw on some Adidas joggers and a green t-shirt. I didn’t see the point of getting dressed up for an apartment viewing but I still looked nice.
As I continued to move around my apartment (making finishing touches), I heard a hard knock on my door. I looked over to my wall clock to see that it was exactly 8PM – I was already liking the idea of rooming Allen purely based on the fact that he was here on time.
I rushed over to the door and when I opened it, I greeted Allen with a handshake. Truthfully, I wanted to hug him but we weren’t familiar with each other like that,.
“How’s it going man?” I asked him, stepping aside so he could enter my apartment.
“It’s going good man, thank you for agreeing to show me the extra room.” Allen said, taking his jacket off.
As I locked the door and followed him into my living room, I couldn’t help but look down at his ass – it was fat and it was sitting high. My first thought was “If he’s on it, I’m going to fuck him before the end of the night.”
As I thought about bending Allen over in my bedroom, he interrupted my thoughts.
“You have a nice place, Desean…You always keep it this clean?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Thank you man…and I keep it clean, but if I’m being honest, I did a nice deep cleaning, I wanted to make sure it was on-point for you tonight.” I joked, which resulted in him smiling.
“Haha, I feel you…” He said.
“Hey, this is random, but why did you get fired from your Resident Assistant job? I hear it’s almost impossible to get fired so I have to ask what happened.” I said, prying for information. I needed to make sure he didn’t have any major red flags.
Allen looked over to me and released a deep sigh before responding. “I got fired because I overslept during a scheduled fire evacuation drill for my building. I’d just come back from a long day of classes and it slipped by mind. With me working in housing, that’s an immediate termination from the Resident Services team on campus. I’d never been written up or anything, but I did sleep through that drill so I couldn’t fight the termination.” Allen said, seeming sad.
“Damn, my bad for asking. That really sucks.” I said, regretting having even asked.
“It’s alright, it’s done now.” Allen said, shrugging.
Rather than make it awkward and ask more questions, I figured I should begin showing him the apartment. He was interested in exploring the space so I allowed him to walk around freely (which allowed me to check his ass out in peace) and he seemed to like the room that he’d been staying in and the space overall. With my apartment’s close proximity to campus, it was a forgone conclusion that Allen was going to become my new roommate and I would finally stop living check to check.
“So, how do you like it overall?” I asked him as I followed him back into the living room.
“I like it, I like it a lot. We just have to go over some specific details if we’re going to do this roommate thing.” Allen said as he walked over to the couch and sat down. I raised an eyebrow, trying to understand what he meant.
“Okay, I’m all ears.” I said as I joined him on the couch.
“Well, first thing…what’s the security deposit situation like? Also, how much is rent each month?” he asked.
“Well, the apartment is in my name, so I paid the $700 security deposit when I move in. I spoke to my landlord and if you move in, he would add you to the lease and you’d pay a $350 deposit. I would get half of mine back since we’d be splitting the apartment. “ I said.
“Okay, that doesn’t sound bad. What about the utilities? What all comes with the apartment and what bills are in your name? I know we’ll be splitting everything evenly so I want to make sure I’m aware of what all I can look forward to spending.” Allen said. Damn, he was pretty prepared.
“Well, the apartment comes with most of the utilities included – I only pay separately for electricity, cable and internet. The electricity bill is usually low, but that’s because I’m almost never here between my job, my internship and school but I don’t see it being too high. My cable and internet package come up to $80, which isn’t bad if you split it.” I said.
Allen seemed pleased with my answers, which made me feel confident that I was very close to him agreeing to move in. As Allen took time to think about everything that I’d just said, I stared at him, taking in his beauty. He was really sexy.

“Woah, you have to chill!” I shouted as my dick print jutted out, only being held captive by my Adidas joggers. Almost as a reflex, I covered my dick print with my hands.” Allen simply licked his lips.
“You wild man. How do you even know I fuck with niggas?” I said, curious to see how he’d respond.
Allen rolled his eyes, then he smirked. “I always thought you got down, but I’ve never seen you on the apps or anything. I knew you did for sure when Quan told me to make sure I didn’t get in the habit of bringing random niggas by while living with you because he didn’t want me ruining the chapter’s image.”
I laughed at this. “Man, Quan told me that same shit when he mentioned that you were looking for a roommate. That don’t have shit to do with me possibly being gay though.” I said.
I could tell that Allen was flirting with me and that he was interested. At that moment, I decided to flirt back with him, wanting to say whatever I needed to say to get him to agree to become my roommate.
“You’re right, it doesn’t…When I asked him why any of that mattered, he slipped up and told me that y’all fucked around a year ago and he was salty that you ghosted him.” Allen revealed. I instantly laughed, I knew that this nigga was still mad at me.
“Man…listen. I didn’t ‘ghost’ him, I simply didn’t return the feelings that he had for me and I didn’t owe him that. He’ll get over it. Damn, he didn’t have to out me though…” I said, standing up and pacing around my living room.
Allen quickly stood up and spoke. “You’re right, he didn’t but it was an accident and I swore to him that I’d pretend that I didn’t know until you told me. But when I saw that dick, I couldn’t help myself.” As annoyed as I was, that made my ego swell, just a slight bit. I couldn’t believe that Allen and I were having this conversation. I wasn’t even concerned with him being my roommate anymore, I wanted to see where this would go.
“Man, whatever.” I said, dropping my hands to my side, allowing my dick print to show freely.
“I’m serious though.” Allen said in a low voice, stepping up to me and rubbing his hands along the length of my dick. I instantly shuddered, as I hadn’t had any kind of intimate contact in a minute.
“Man, you better chill, if you keep touching on me, you’re going to find yourself up, close and personal with my dick.” I said just as Allen ‘s hands slipped into the waistband of my joggers.
