I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge a gazillion times, but I get giddy every time I see it nonetheless. https://www.instagram.com/p/BrQSelwlVE5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8dt6bvbiou48

Yesterday I got to listen to (and boomerang with) the Queen of Boomerangs herself, @elainewelteroth. She dropped a lot of great gems, but one that really stood out was "your life doesn't have to be defined by one dream". So I'm sharing it, to encourage everyone to define your life on your own terms, and to dream a few more dreams. During Facing Race I created and led a session about Immigrant Mental Health under the Trump administration. Studies show that immigrant mental health HAS deteriorated under Trump’s administration as immigrants are showcasing higher levels of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. * The egregious part is that this was the administration’s intent. They want immigrants to be constantly afraid, and looking over their shoulder. The former acting director of ICE stated in June 2017 that “If you entered this country illegally you should be looking over your shoulder and you should be worried.” The Trump administration hopes this leads to fewer immigrants entering the country, and more immigrants self-deporting. * Furthermore, studies show that when immigrants feel safe (such as when immigrants receive DACA) their mental health becomes better. Having safety, understandably, boosts immigrant mental health. * The panel was amazing, knowledgeable and poignant. The spoke to their lived experiences, and their work experiences at the ACLU, NILC, and as Licensed Mental Health Workers of Color. We actually ran out of time because there was so much ground to cover. * I almost didn't do this, and almost pulled the plug about a million times right until the week of the panel. My anxiety attacks were overpowering me. I was sure everything that could go wrong, would: the panelists wouldn't show up. People wouldn't come and the room would be empty. I'd stutter over my words (I stutter when nervous sometimes). And on, and on, and on. It turned out amazing (and the surveys at the end showcased the audience thought so as well). Had it not been for friends and coworkers that encouraged me and believed in me I would have never done this, and now I'm beyond glad I did it: Something shifted for me when I was up there speaking, and the words began flowing. I say this to say: support your friends and colleagues even if it's just words of encouragement. They may be much more impactful than you realize.
