Two weekends ago, my Instagram feed was mostly selfies of young Coachellagoers posing in front of palm trees, and there was not one inch of my body that felt any FOMO. That nagging Fear of Missing Out, which used to plague me — when I’d be sitting at home eating Carr’s Table Water Crackers with almond butter and jelly and watching House Hunters International, and I’d scroll through my phone and discover that everyone except me was at South by Southwest, dancing on a table with Kanye West — has morphed into something else entirely: If I were teleported to Indio, California, right now and plopped in the middle of the David Guetta set at the safari tent, I think I would run as fast as my fashion Birkenstocks could take me.

Google’s New Wireless Service Will Pay You Back for the Data You Don’t Use

Google is now a mobile carrier, with the announcement of its newProject Fi service. Available exclusively to owners of Google’s Nexus 6 phone, Project Fi is a radical departure from the kind of wireless plans offered by leading carriers like AT&T and Verizon.

Unlike a standard plan, which charges you a flat rate for a set amount of data even if you don’t use all of it, Google’s plan will charge you only for the data you use and pay you back for any that you don’t.

Say, for example, that you purchase a 2 GB monthly plan for $20. If you use only 1.6 GB of that data, Google will reimburse you $4. Use only 0.4 GB of data and you’ll get $16 back.

In addition to data, Project Fi provides unlimited talk and text, unlimited international text, and coverage in more than 120 countries. (That base level of service costs $20 per month; you can then add a data plan for $10/GB per month).

And unlike most wireless plans, it charges you the same amount for data overseas as it does here in the U.S. Google will also let you use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot at no additional charge.

Beyond offering a new way to pay for your data, Project Fi has a unique way of connecting you to the Web. Rather than using single carrier network, Project Fi uses two: Sprint and T-Mobile.

So if you’re riding the bus on your way to work and your 4G LTE connection with Sprint starts to slow down and there is a faster T-Mobile signal available, Project Fi will automatically switch you over to T-Mobile’s network to ensure you always have the best possible connection.

If your Sprint and T-Mobile connections are running slow, Project Fi will move you over to one of more than a million free open Wi-Fi hotspots to get your data. While you’re connected to the hotspots, Project Fi automatically encrypts your information to ensure it remains private.

How the Internet of Things Could Save the Bees

It’s a concept that’s both simple and terrifying. For years, scientists have known that honeybees are disappearing at an alarming rate. Fewer honeybees means less pollination, which could lead to a rapid drop in food supplies. If the bee die-off continues, the entire human race will be threatened. We need bees.

Fortunately, researchers at the University of Minnesota may have come up with an Internet of Things device that could help prevent the bee-pocalypse.

One theory behind the massive bee collapse involves the Varroa destructor mite, a tiny, vampirelike parasite that lives inside honeybee colonies and literally sucks the life out of them, infecting them with a virus that contributes to colony collapse disorder.

The Eltopia MiteNot can wipe out the mites using a circuit board camouflaged to blend in with a traditional honeycomb frame made from cornstarch wax and other renewable materials. Beekeepers install one MiteNot frame inside the hive; the board’s embedded sensors detect temperature fluctuations and other environmental data, then transmit it via a 3G cellular connection to Eltopia’s cloud-based BeeSafe application.

Based on sensor data, BeeSafe can detect the optimal moment when female mites have laid their eggs, but before the male mites have fertilized them. It then sends a command back to the MiteNot frame to heat up just enough to sterilize the male mites without harming the bees.

When covered in wax, the frame with MiteNot installed becomes indistinguishable from any other part of the hive and can be reused as needed. Its great advantage is that it can fight the mites without the use of pesticides, which could also harm the bees.

The Eltopia MiteNot is still being tested, but it may be available as early as fall 2015. Hopefully we’ll all still bee around by then.

Adventures in long form content

You know, sometimes we want to write more than just 140 characters. We want to write a lot, with many paragraphs and maybe even some images in the middle. I wonder how these stories will look like in the dashboard. Will my formatting survive? What if I write a full sentence in bold? And in italic? And in bold and italic, crazy, huh?

The second paragraph is also an achievement. I can use it to link to some website that you should definitely visit today. And then I can set up the scene for an image that is coming up next.

The image above is cute, right? Some of the elements that make it great:
