Lleu Llaw Gyffes, a powerful Welsh warrior, was cursed by his mother Arianrhod to never have a human wife. Gwydion, his father, and Math, his great-uncle, counteracted this curse by creating a wife, Blodeuwedd, from the flowers of the forest.

Pwyll, a young prince of Dyfed, met Arawn, King of the otherworld Annwn, and his hounds while hunting near the river Cych. Pwyll angered Arawn by stealing a deer his hounds were eating and was made to atone by disguising himself as Arawn and defeating his rival Hafgan.

The Giant King Bran the Blessed waged war against King Matholwch to save his sister Branwen from an abusive marriage. He is successful but is mortally wounded and his forces decimated, and so he has his seven surviving men decapitate him and carry his head to London.

Okay so, I think this is the guy!

Caerleon's website describes it as a gorgon's head, but the official Museums of Wales' tumblr account (which I'm delighted to know exists) calls it a cat head, so idk. But that very much looks like a cat boy to me

Yesterday we spent the entire day in reverence of Branwen and her story.

The story of Branwen is one bubbling with wisdom that we could do with remembering in the modern world.

Branwen was a foreigner in a foreign land who was used as a scapegoat and mistreated terribly. The entire tale ripples with narratives concerning the othering of people we might perceive as “different”, and the devastation that can come when these beliefs divide us. Remind you of any current issues?

Photos taken at Pont Branwen over the Afon Alaw, a bridge which crosses the river beside which Branwen died according to the second branch. And Bedd Branwen, Branwen’s grave. An ancient monument that became associated with Branwen in local lore. Interesting how the monument looks almost like a heart broken in two. Evocative of the fact Branwen died of a broken heart.
