Atelier Štěpán completes cylindrical white church in the Czech Republic
Windows appear to have been carved out of the curving walls of this cylindrical church in the Czech Republic, designed by Brno-based studio Atelier Štěpán. Atelier Štěpán designed the Church of St Wenceslas for Sazovice, a village in the Zlín Region that had wanted a new church since before the second world war.
The Paperer
My immediate environment has always played an integral role in my artmaking process - not only creating works in and of the landscape, but causing an awareness of my own immediate impact on the environment. This has triggered my investigation into the negative ecological effects of commercial papermaking. In contemporary life, the packaging of consumer goods has generated a demand for vast quantities of paper, so here my material choices represent a desire not to add more product to the environment, but rather to make use of existing waste. To handmake art paper I sourced discarded architects’ paper - which also suggests urbanisation – and used readily available seawater – mindful of South Africa’s current water shortage. This has enabled me to keep my artmaking environmental footprint light. I came to realise that many consumers are familiar only with products ready for consumption, rarely considering the way they are bred, grown or manufactured. Most of this knowledge is superficially acquired via the text and imagery on the packaging, in turn designed to shape the individual’s interpretation of the production processes and inform his/her purchasing choices. In The Paperer installation, each wall piece stands metaphorically for embedded communication, with the intention of commenting on how we receive, interpret and sift through information. Consequently, my making process – sensitive to the environment – is as conceptually engrained into the final artwork as my concern around the consumer’s easy acceptance of product information and the subsequent effect of that on the environment; and both hold equal weight.
OK - Real Talk
I rarely post text posts or even share anything about myself because I always considered this blog to be solely about art, art history and historical info. And of course, it’s going to stay this way BUT it’s time to make some changes.
I’ve spent 6 years with this blog, 8 years abroad and countless years “hoping” something would spring up from my love and passion for art and present itself. Ok so yeah, that isn’t going to happen. I am going to have to find it myself.
I started with a call for artists and blogs to share - I got one response, which is awesome. But out of the ¼ million followers I really expected more people to come forward and want to share their stuff.
So, I am just going to take it upon myself to go out there and find you and share your awesomeness. I am sure people didn’t respond out of embarassment or thinking they’re stuff isn’t good about to be blasted across the universe for being great. Yeah, I don’t care. I’m coming for you.
I’m not an artist but I love art. And funnily enough after years of writing 15+ page papers on art pieces, I learned to translate that into a job in marketing. I can make anything sound exciting and flashy. (You can test me if you don’t believe this). It’s amazing how staring at a painting and extrapolating information can make you good at marketing some useless product or idea and getting people pumped about it.
I see so many great artists and really interesting blogs that people NEED to know about. No more having this be a hobby. We’re going to do something about it.
Now I know about 1% of you will take the time to read this but hey that’s way better than 0%.

The Hague’s City Hall Gets a Mondrian Makeover for De Stijl’s Centennial
A giant homage to the most iconic Dutch modern art movement debuted today in The Hague.
The Dutch are marking the centennial of their most famous modern art movement, De Stijl, a term coined by Piet Mondrian in 1917. In honor of this major anniversary, The Hague unveiled today a transformative makeover of its city hall building into what Dutch officials claim is “the largest Mondrian painting in the world.”

While it can be popularly stated that Rothko is all about color, these striking and stark black and white photos of his color work from a 1970′s Guggenheim retrospective catalog, offer us a different look into Rothko’s use of light and shadow.

Yahav Draizin
Yahav Draizin is a talented photographer and artist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. Yahav works in advertising as a deputy c.e.o for JWT Israel. He creates stunning images by combining everyday objects with images on his iPhone, and it’s simply brilliant. “As part of my job, and my passion, I’m constantly looking for inspiration to boost my creative skills and I love doing it by taking photos with a twist,” Draizin explaines.

“I’m a senior design engineer at a stamping company. The company went bankrupt a few years ago, so a bank bought it and sucked it dry, then they sold it to the Portuguese. I don’t think the Portuguese company knew what they were getting into. They don’t know dick. These guys will piss on your leg and tell you it’s raining. They threaten to fire me about once a week, but they never do. Because I’m that fucking good.”
Macomb County has made a lot of news lately. A northern suburb of Detroit, the county is largely ‘blue collar’ and its economy is heavily dependent upon the auto industry. Last week Macomb County voted decisively for Donald Trump. It was the first time in almost thirty years that a Republican presidential candidate has carried Macomb. Many pundits have pointed to this shift as representative of a greater movement among America’s white working class. For the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posting stories from Macomb County. I didn’t ask anyone who they voted for. Very few of the stories even touch on politics. And while the series cannot presume to be representative of an entire region, hopefully it will introduce you to a few of the people who live there.

Rep. John Lewis, one of the last living icons of civil disobedience during the civil rights movement, was leading a sit-in on the House floor Wednesday in an effort to force a vote on gun control.
“Now is the time for us to find a way to dramatize it, to make it real,” Lewis, D-Ga., said. “We have to occupy the floor of the House until there is action.”
Lewis and roughly 40 House Democrats stood briefly to recite the Pledge of Allegiance as a couple dozen visitors in the gallery looked on.
“No bill, no break,” the Democrats chanted loudly before returning to the floor.
The protest is not being televised because the House has not formally gaveled into session. House members took to social media to lodge their protests using the hashtags #NoBillNoBreak, #NOMORESILENCE and #goodtrouble.
