My deranged headcanon is that Ogilvie stole Dennis badge so he can finish the hacking job. He was never a medical student, he was the inside team member of the hackers all along. The plan was to get everything they needed by the time his shift was over, but when that didnt work Ogilvie had to figure out a way to make sure the mission went as planned.

Why are they hacking the hospital you ask? Because theyre trying to steal the original copy of the declaration of independence that was hidden in the basement 100 years ago.

Usually when I would recommend Project Hail Mary to people I would have to say “don’t worry, it’s fine if you don’t understand the layout of the ship” bc ngl I wasn’t quite sure either (despite the diagram. I found it unhelpful when paired with Weir’s writing). I have built the Hail Mary lego set today, and I think I still don’t understand the book version, but I’ve got a pretty good grasp on what’s going on with the movie version. Maybe.
