Carlos didn’t force Lidia into anything.
So I keep reading comments everywhere that describe Carlos as a monster, as an abuser who forced Lidia into doing what he wanted. Seriously, guys, this is too much! You can call him stupid, dumb, idiot, naive, because that’s what he was, but not monster or abuser. ‘Cause that’s not what he was. No one denies that Carlos is 100% guilty for what he did. He fought for a good cause - keeping his family together, protecting his family - but he ended up doing it in the wrong way, because he tried to do anything by himself and he was not strong enough to do it, because of his fears and insecurities.
In this story, there’s only one villain and her name is Carmen. If there’s an abuser in all of this, it’s her. This woman has always done the worst to her own children. She made them insecure, fragile. They never had a loving father, either. Then Carlos finds this girl, Lidia. For the first time he finds someone who truly believes in him and loves him for the person he is, and from the childish and spoiled guy he was, he has turned into a better man who’d do the impossible to make the woman he loves happy. He’s totally inspired by her. His mother has always tried to separate them. She was always against this union and did everything in her power to tear them apart. And in season 4 she found her way.
Carlos was indeed insecure about Lidia’s feelings towards Francisco. He felt alone, neglected by her and what he heard her saying to him that night didn’t help him at all. Her silence didn’t help him at all, either. But Carlos never forced Lidia not to go to the hospital, not to spend the nights there if she wanted to. Yes, you could see he wasn’t happy about it, that he would rather for her to stay with him but he didn’t lock her in their room, he didn’t yell at her that he didn’t like what she was doing. He let her do what she wanted to. He supported her in every way he could. He was loving and caring and adorable with her. He actually tried his best to protect her from everything because he realized she wasn’t having a good time.
He asked her to stay with him that night. He asked. He begged, maybe. He was convincing, I’ll even say that. But Lidia wanted to stay, too. She needed him as much as he needed her. “When life becomes too difficult to bear, love can be the only harbor in the storm to comfort you.” They’re in love. They make love. Is he lying to her in that moment? Yes, he is, but one thing doesn’t exclude the other. Did anyone have any problem when Lidia made love to Carlos, was in a relationship with him without telling him the truth about her identity, about her intentions of stealing the Rotari? Did anyone doubt Lidia’s love for Carlos? Why does it have to be different with Carlos? And I repeat, that night Lidia stayed because she wanted to stay.
And it’s the same when it comes to the wedding proposal. She said yes because she wanted to say yes. He proposed, he said the right things, and she also realized that life is too short, that can change in a minute. One minute you’re together, and the other one you’re not. As it was happening to Sara and Carlota. She said yes because she wanted to marry him. She has always wanted to marry him. She has always wanted to be with him, and she was with him, in fact. She felt like a wife, anyway. And it was her decision to stop going to the hospital for awhile; she’s the one who admitted she was a bit too obsessed with Francisco’s issues. It all came from her. Carlos didn’t force her at all. And yes of course he was already doing everything wrong, but I’m talking from Lidia’s pov. She was free to do what she felt to do. As she felt free to leave him and to protect Eva. And it’s not like Carlos tied Lidia to a chair or pointed a gun at her head to force her to stay. He was perfectly conscious of what he did and that he was guilty.
Carlos should have said everything to Lidia about the money, but I think that by paying Doctor Miracle to cure Francisco, he did the right thing and made that lie disappear. Unfortunately by doing that, he didn’t resolve her mother’s problem. He didn’t get the right help from his sister, who did nothing but playing with his insecurities and talking with their mother behind his back. If she hadn’t said anything to Carmen about Francisco, the mess would have been less huge. Carlos wouldn’t have felt so trapped. But that’s not how the story went, it couldn’t go this way, or else Lidia and Carlos couldn’t be separated. And that was the point of all of this. Because if Carlos didn’t do what he did, if Carlos didn’t fail, they would still be together, because Lidia had no intention to leave him and their family. She only wanted Francisco to be okay, because clearly he’s someone she loves, it was right for him to be fine after what he did, and she did feel a bargain about it, because she got her happiness back because of him. It was just that, but Lidia knew who she wanted to be with. She has always known. Her choice was made a long time ago, with both Carlos and Francisco there.
Obviously they wrote her ambiguous and silent for a reason. They had to build the doubt and the fear in Carlos’ mind, or else no one would find any weakness to play with. And he went completely blind, he didn’t see the truth. He didn’t want Elisa to put words to his relationship with Lidia, but he let her comparisons with her relationship with Francisco get through him. When these 2 relationships have absolutely nothing in common. But you can’t have a selective memory and consider only what’s convenient for you to consider. You always need to see the big picture.
