What if I told you that Peeta was the tradwife? What then?

I know this was probably meant as a quick little "haha this is so funny" comment, but we need to own up to what being a tradwife actually means and stop casually using the phrase.

Because we REALLY shouldn't be trying to glorify a social movement that wants to remove women from the workplace, remove them from politics, and take away the autonomy that our mothers and grandmothers fought for and suffered without.

Wow, I was just rereading the comments on my latest chapter of The Victorious and I think it’s so funny how half my readers were like: You know, I think Peeta’s brother and uncle may really have a point this time. Peeta could stand to be a little more mature.

And then the other half of my readers were like: I want to murder every single one of Peeta’s family members.

We love a divisive chapter! Anyway, I’m working on replying to more comments. I swear that I have some of the best commenters on AO3 and I’ve been really lax in replying.

Two parts in SotR I haven't seen talked about enough that had me screaming.

1. Haymitch basically having booty shorts that said "courtesy of the Capitol" on the ass

2. Haymitch being like, "Lenore Dove's closeted gay uncle Clerk Carmine doesn't approve of me dating her even though I'm an ALLY who supports HIS relationship."

I think that Chaff not being in SOTR suggests something fairly important about Haymitch’s character. That despite how he appears at the end of the novel (but before the epilogue), he does make at least one friend in the intervening years between SOTR and the trilogy. Catching Fire specifically refers to Chaff as Haymitch’s friend. So despite his clear efforts to isolate himself in District 12, he can’t completely stop himself from making new friends among the victors.

Love this bc I had just assumed we would see Chaff in SOTR but when we didn’t, I’m not sure how much I pondered it after. But I would’ve just assumed they met afterwards obviously. I’m wondering if it’s some sort of goofy weird alcoholic trauma bonding friendship??

Haha, I think Katniss describes them as drinking buddies in Catching Fire and says that he’s good for Haymitch’s dark moods or something like that. So now I just like to imagine that Chaff has this extreme Normal Guy energy that helps bring Haymitch out of his moods at times.

Like, Haymitch is just sitting in a dimly lit room with a glass of whiskey and reciting The Raven in his head. And then Chaff just comes in, turns on all the lights, cracks open a couple of beers, makes them some nachos, and makes Haymitch watch a ballgame or something.

One of the deaths in sotr that we don't talk about enough is Ma/Willamae Abernathy's. she did so much for her boys, and loved them so much. And then Haymitch got reaped and she thought she'd never see him again, but she was still alive when he won. He didn't die, she thought she'd be able to hold him again. But then she died, and her death was used to torture her first son. She died holding one of her sons, unable to get him out. And she died in front of another of her sons, unable to answer his screams for her.

Haymitch was only 16 when he lost his mother, a child. And he had already been through the most traumatic few weeks of his life. He watch friends die, and he killed. And he thought he'd finally be able to get a hug from his mother, the first comfort he'd ever known. But she died, and he could do nothing but watch and scream

The people in this fandom who think they can bully fan fiction writers into writing Finnick as a Career need to think again. I’ve always read fics with either interpretation and I can enjoy him either way. I would write him either way depending on the vibe of the story.

But people demanding that I or anyone else MAKE FINNICK A CAREER (all caps theirs) in fan fiction is super entitled. I will write Finnick as a Career if I feel like it. I will write Finnick as a not-Career if I feel like it. I will write Finnick as a mermaid if I feel like it. I will write Finnick as a pirate, a modern college student, an astronaut, or a vampire if I feel like it. It is fan fiction.

Very telling that they came back at me with something about “marketing” as well. Marketing? No fan fiction writer has a fucking marketing department. Stop approaching a hobby that people do for free as if you were complaining about an item that you bought at a big box store. I’m not saying that it would be okay to label a story as having a Career Finnick when it didn’t, but that wasn’t what was being discussed.

If you only like him as a Career then you are certainly welcome to write him that way. You are also welcome to only read fics in which he is a Career. You are not welcome to demand that other fan writers write him to your preferences. There’s an old saying in fandom that is applicable here: Don’t like, don’t read.

This post is about Finnick, but the same goes for Annie Cresta.

Also, please don’t argue about whether he is or isn’t a Career in canon under this post. There are lots of posts about that topic and this isn’t one of them. This post is about the entitled attitude that people are taking towards fan fiction writers who write Finnick a certain way. For the purposes of this discussion it doesn’t matter whether he is a Career because fan fiction is not required to follow canon.

I guess I should clarify something about this for my child-free friends out here because I don’t want you to think this is a jab at you somehow — it’s the furthest thing from that! *as a woman who does not want children right now* this post is in no way meant to invalidate anyone’s relating to Katniss’s feelings (because I relate to them myself) … what I am saying is that it’s not unhealthy for a loving partnership to have conversations about these things … if it is unhealthy, it’s not a loving partnership

I would tend to agree with this. The thing that I’ve never understood about this whole debate is that people on both sides never seem to acknowledge that it’s perfectly normal and even recommended for couples to discuss whether they would like to have children. Maybe it’s because a lot of people first read this series when they are like 13 years old? But two adults in a longterm relationship absolutely should discuss where they stand on children. And these conversations can happen without one partner exerting pressure on the other.

Like, everyone talks about it like there are basically two options. Either Peeta pestered (or forced????) Katniss into having kids. OR they never once had the kids discussion in fifteen years of being together until Katniss just one day intuited that Peeta would want them because he was making puppy eyes at a baby or something.

And I always just think … she probably knew that he wanted kids because this is a normal thing to know about your partner? Because they’d discussed it in a healthy and adult way?

I’m a middle-aged childfree woman, btw.

I honestly don’t know why people think that Katniss would tell us that Effie Trinket has a sister even if we assume that she knows this information. Katniss barely told us that Peeta has brothers. As in, we never learn the names of Peeta’s brothers. Katniss isn’t telling us a damn thing about Effie’s family members unless it is directly relevant to the plot.

Sometimes I think we wouldn’t have even learned about Peeta’s brothers except Suzanne Collins was like, “How do I make it more obvious Katniss volunteering for Prim is highly unusual?”
