it’s crazy how many of patrick’s best vocal choices are on mania

like obviously the moaning all through church but also all the changes in tone mid-line based on what he’s saying. the transition from the anger of i know this whole damn city thinks it needs you to the softness of but not as much as i do. the emotion in not sure i’m there yet but i’m certain i’ve arrived switching to the cold and controlled oops i did it again i forgot what i was losing my mind about. the softness of when your stitch comes loose i want to sleep on every piece of fuzz and stuffing that comes out of you to the strain of i took too many hits off this memory. the easy, almost absent way he’s singing in sunshine riptide and the anger of seems like the whole damn world went and lost its mind and the sweetness of would you sneak me a wristband? and the desperation of just tell me tell me tell me i am the only one even if it’s not true and you’re the one habit i just can’t kick and i love you to death but i just can’t and i just want to let you break my brain and i can’t seem to get a grip. the way there’s a madness that’s just coursing right through me sounds exactly like that’s what’s happening while he’s saying it.

to some extent he does this thoughout all their discography but mania as an album particularly lends itself to this and i’m so glad he decided to fully lean into it. it’s SO good
