When I was a young closeted gay kid I used to think about having my own apartment and how when I was on my own I could put whatever I wanted in that space. I used to think about how liberating it would be to be able to have gay pictures and art out and not have to worry about others seeing it or judging me. I actually thought about how great it would be to subscribe to a gay magazine and not have to worry about what anyone who saw it thought of me. I’m sure the guy who bought this in 1991 looked it a couple of times, maybe even for a couple of weeks and then put it in a box until now, he never thought about the one year old kid who was just born and would own this 26 years later and what this magazine would mean to him. To me this is more than just a porn magazine it’s a reminder to reflect on how far I’ve come and how much further we as a community need to go. Reading the articles, seeing the ads for phone sex lines and the PSAs about HIV/AIDS treatment has made me think about a time when it wasn’t ok to be gay. It’s helped remind me that we’ve come very far but there is still a long road to go before our work is done. Take some time to think about the past and the people that came before you and how you can make the world a better place for those who come after you.
