Ooh, pls tell us your thoughts about the 3x05 bike scene!
Okayyy. So I kinda had thoughts on this when watching the scene but talking about JJ taking the fall for Pope and his self sacrificing tendencies it got a little more fleshed out in my mind.
So time and time again we have JJ putting his friends above him. Above his life, future and safety. All to different degrees but it’s a recurring theme. JJ leading the dog away, confessing to a felony he didn’t commit, preparing for a shoot out for John b, jail break plan ect ect ect. And the bike chase scene is just a continuation of this reckless, self sacrificing, self fulfilling prophecy sort of behaviour. He’s going to die young or end up in jail anyway - so might as well do it for something worth while.
In this case we get JJ provoking and leading away the cops - not before making sure Kie is safe and away from this risk - leading to a very dangerous chase that will end in him getting arrested or dying, like he almost did. To protect his friends and what’s important to them, the cross. JJ does this because he sees this as his role, and it gets reinforced in moments when Pope lets him take the fall like I was saying earlier. JJ’s been raised to think love is conditional, conditional to what you give and to not take to much. So it’s almost like JJ feels the need to show his worth to his friends by being this scapegoat for them constantly, there’s a reason for them to keep him around and love him then.
And this continually gets reinforced to JJ after the fact because of how the pogues react when he makes it out and is okay. When he sees Pope again at midsummers he gets a hug and concern from Pope. Aka he receives affection and proof of love so it makes when he did worth it and justifies it in his head. Self-sacrifice = people love you.
The same thing happens after the bike accident. Pope hugs him, happy and excited that he’s alive. Even Sarah who pushed him and tells him off a bit hugs him and is overall is just relieved that he’s alive and okay. More love. More reassurance. More justification for him acting like he’s does.
But. For the first time. We get a response that sends a different message to JJ. He get Kies reaction. Which isn’t just pure relief that he’s okay. Which isn’t just hugging him and holding him close and showering him in love. We get Kie who’s just had a breakdown thinking she lost him, we get Kie staring him down, mad, telling him not to do it again.
The guilt on JJ’s face is so evident in this moment. In this moment it is made clear to him that losing him would wreck kiara. That the sacrifice would not be worth the cost to her. That he’s worth more than what they have to gain from him doing dumb shit. Kie doesn’t just let him get away with it, she doesn’t reinforce this idea in his head of what his role is, this idea that if he does everything he can to make sure his friends are okay it will prove he loved them and in return they will love him. That that’s how you get people to care about you, by serving them. But instead Kie is mad at him and JJ can finally see that by hurting himself it’s not just hurting him. And that the loss of him would actually truly effect the others. That in trying to help them by putting himself beneath them is actually hurting them.
I think Kie’s reaction here is something so new and different to JJ and it started that tipping point of him knowing his worth. Of him realising that he’s loved unconditionally and he doesn’t need to earn it. Finally JJ can see the effect him doing these things has on other rather than them just being greatfull that he came out okay in the end.
