I know that large parts of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom used to be pretty seriously negative about the character of Buffy Anne Summers and I think that it's good that that's no longer the case. I think Buffy is the most compelling character on the show and to be honest I don't think it's a particularly close contest.

But I also think that perhaps we've over-corrected more than a little bit, because a lot of people on here seem to think that the central plot of every season of the show can be summed up as "this season Buffy continues to be perfect and flawless and does nothing wrong ever and her so-called friends are mean to her for no reason". And beyond not being true, that's just ... not very interesting? The show is quite literally about Buffy growing up: if the process of growing up doesn't involve learning or changing in any way then I think something's gone wrong.

Part of the reason Buffy is as interesting a character as she is is the fact that she does have very real, very consistently written flaws. She struggles to express her feelings and she lies to herself about things she doesn't want to accept as true and she can be petty and judgmental and at times a little thoughtless of other people's feelings. She makes plenty of mistakes. She's (almost) always sympathetic, but she's not always right, and the show would not be improved if she was.
