OPALITE 2026 — dir. Taylor Swift
taylor swift InStyle (2009) icons.
My favorite part about writing is that first spark of an idea. It can happen at any time, for any reason. The idea for the Opalite music video crash landed into my imagination when I was doing promo for The Life of a Showgirl. I was a guest on one of my favorite shows, The Graham Norton Show. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s a UK late night show where Graham Norton (the insanely charismatic and lovable host) invites a random group of actors, entertainers, musicians, etc to be on his show and we all sit there and chat like it’s a dinner party. They even serve wine. Anyway. I remember thinking I got ridiculously lucky with the group I was paired with. Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi. All people whose work I’ve admired from afar. When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*. And so a week later he received an email script I’d written for the Opalite video, where he was playing the starring role. I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory. To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the 90’s with us and help with this video. You might even recognize some friendly faces from The Eras Tour. I got to work with one of my favorite people in the world, Rodrigo Prieto, again! I had more fun than I ever imagined - Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters. Shot on film. The Opalite video is out now on Spotify & Apple Music.

putting my sydcarmy agenda aside, i really don’t understand the claire/carmy lore. every single time i watch their scenes and they’re talking about their mad, all-consuming, insane love—i just DON’T get it.
am i supposed to believe something that i didn’t it see happening? am i supposed to root for this couple?
everyone around them says how they’re made for each other. how they are meant to be. but claire doesn’t even understand the basics of carmy’s personality traits.
when they rekindle their love affair, she takes this man to a fucking PARTY. THEE carmen berzatto goes to a party where he pretends to be someone else. his disassociation is crazy.
he bails HIS restaurant renovations to spend time with her, leaving everything to his supposed partner to take care of and she [claire] doesn’t even say a thing. when you care for someone, you also want them to care about their personal interests. she doesn’t do that.
and i absolutely despise what the writes on the show made with this whole ‘being stuck in the walk-in and being the self-loathed fucked up guy that i am’ situation. i hate that richie was yelling at him while he was stuck in there (but that’s not what i’ll be talking about here).
i can’t stand the idea that claire walked into the kitchen, OVERHEARD his complaints about >HIMSELF< and took it as some self-absorbed joke about HER. she’s not that important. not at all.
i couldn’t care less about her. and couldn’t even pretend to believe this supposed love story. i really don’t care.
You hit all the key points of the dissonance behind their interactions and relationship.
From a writing perspective, I think there is a simple reason people don't connect with Claire. Audiences don't care what a character is or what they do as much as they care for why they are the way they are. That's how you can make people empathize with characters that go from morally grey to genuinely reprehensible. And for Claire? They don't give afuck.
We are told Claire is a caring person, and yet her introduction scene —her explanation of why she wanted to become a doctor —actually showed her not caring for her injured classmate as much as she wanted to understand the injury herself. That's the capsule of her character: she likes being around people in crisis, she likes risky situations, and she's managed to commit malpractice at least once. The people in the medical field inside the fandom have commented that he even gave Sydney the wrong diagnosis about her father's condition. So we have reason to believe she is a bad doctor, but has continued in the profession despite her lack of care and self-reflection.
The reason everybody around Claire and Carmy wants them together is that dysfunctional people seek easy solutions — easier than actually looking at themselves, because that is quite painful. Claire presents herself as an angel and everybody believes she is there to "save Carmen, or take care of him, as Fak two said. As for why she doenst undertand or doenst care to undertand carmen personality or emotional stage beyond the traits she can "take care of" is quite possible she is just in that relationship to heal from other relasionship that was toxic. Claire said, "I worked hard to be close to someone." Molly Gordon mentioned that Claire was in a relationship where she was "pushed," so Claire now felt she needed to "push" Carmen into a relationship and into other things, like "fitting" into their social circle ("I force you to participate"). Whatever that means in her mind, and even if she thinks she is helping him, she is doing this to get something out of it, maybe more than because of her feelings for him. And Carmen goes along with it because he grew up trying to earn his mother's love, he is used to being pushed and tolerating inconsideration in order to gain said love.
she wants to understand other people’s misery so she can make sense of her own. i think she wants him to be miserable to be the one who fix it. but i do know she won’t stay with him if he’s healthy. she would lose her role in his life.
there’s a lot of things she does that i haven’t pointed out–like, when he gave her a fake number and she tracked him down either way. this is such a red flag of not accepting his boundaries.
it got me thinking that this is a reflection of how he was raised. his mother had set no boundaries whatsoever. i really believe she was always inviting herself to his personal space like it was hers first. going deeper, i even think donna was the type of mother who saw her children naked and made fun of it. like, when you’re in front of your mother and she points out everything you’re insecure about.
carmy understands shame. guilt. pain. and claire is the physical representation of all that. she makes him embarrassed. awkward. she makes him anxious. i’ve never seen him relaxed around her. she herself points out that he’s heart is beating crazy fast when they’re having a NORMAL conversation.
i guess he feels he’s being set up on fire when he’s with her because he’s actually getting a third degree burn.
