You know what, for what's widely regarded as one of the most racist Resident Evil games, 5's blueprint was very clearly 4. All that "kill the locals, break their stuff and steal their money and jewels" shit? Taken directly from the buy-and-sell mechanic that RE4 had going on. Obviously the main difference is that it's perfectly fine when Leon Kennedy does it to Spanish people, but doing it in Africa whilst playing as another (different) white guy is much more unacceptable and more directly harkens back to these Americans' colonising ancestors.

So yeah, Resident Evil 5 is an extremely racist game, there's no getting around that. However, I think we're giving it a little too much credit and acting like it being racist happened in a vacuum when the whole thing was that it wanted to piggyback off of RE4's success so employed a lot of the same mechanics (the "someone follows you around and might help you defeat enemies" thing was taken from Ashley and Luis, the "kill the locals and steal their shit" thing was taken from the buy-and-sell mechanic, the locals being infected with the Plaga and the head bursters having a chance to have the parasite helicopter around and be an extra-annoying problem for the player was DIRECTLY from RE4 and the giants infected with the plaga and how to defeat them were exactly the same as well), except that they chose to set it in Africa instead of Europe and THAT is why it is seen as the most racist one when RE4 was doing this shit four years prior.

Also, notice how all the lines about the locals being somewhat civilised because they have bathrooms and books came from Leon Kennedy and were said about Spanish people, instead of being from Chris Redfield about African people, where you'd almost expect them to be. Actually, white saviourism aside, Chris isn't verbally racist in this game, at least not so far as I've seen. Obviously the mechanics encourage you to behave like a coloniser, but the extremely-outdated line you'd expect when you hit the marshlands and see the tribe's home with the animal skulls and traditional shields isn't there. Actually, on the subject of how Chris somehow behaves better in this game despite everything, he isn't even overtly misogynistic towards or trying to flirt with Sheva despite the situation being extremely inappropriate and her repeating "I owe you one" whenever the player gives her herbs, first-aid spray or ammo, which you WOULD expect a gross reply to given the time period. Certainly, if Ashley had a similar line in RE4 then the response from Leon/Luis would be absolutely vile.

Leon Should Have Died In Resident Evil: Death Island (2023) And Here's Why

So, for anyone unfamiliar with what is potentially the worst RE film ever and that INCLUDES the live actions + Damnation (2012) Resident Evil: Death Island (2023), it's basically trying to be Avengers (2012) but failing so fucking hard it's painful to watch. Anyways, right before the final battle, the main villain uses bio-drones (basically mosquitos) to infect three out of the five members of the main team; Chris, Claire and Leon. Only Jill Valentine is left uninfected, as the main villain wants her to relive his own trauma and kill her infected friends.

So, Chris and Claire were infected earlier and put in cells (presumably by Maria) alongside the creator of the bio-drones, Antonio Taylor. Leon and Jill arrive later and the former is infected as the main villain (Dylan, for anyone curious) monologues about why he's doing what he's doing. He shoots Taylor to amp up the tension and Jill escapes with the help of a flashbang.

As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, Chris and Claire, whilst infected, are confined to seperate cells. With Taylor dying from the gunshot wound, the only threat they can possible pose is to themselves. Leon, on the other hand?

This motherfucker isn't, he's clearly free to roam as he pleases when he turns and fuck any tourist who's unlucky enough to run into him after surviving this long I guess.

He was the immediate danger and whilst Death Island was a slopfest, it could have been significantly improved if Jill had shot him and, whilst pretending to check if he was truly dead and not a zombie, taken the flashbang for herself. For a movie supposedly focusing on her, she had shockingly little agency, mostly just reacting to whatever was going on until right at the end when she made the choice to distract a mutated Dylan.

Anyway, as I was saying, Leon was the immediate threat, both to Jill and anyone still alive in Alcatraz. They didn't have any way of knowing that Rebecca was coming with a vaccine, so it seems uncharacteristically selfish of Jill to just leave him alive. Yes she was headed to the armoury to try and destroy the drones and there was a time limit, but she could have created a huge problem for herself if it wasn't for Leon's plot armour. He's bigger and presumably stronger than her, and their fight in the sewers only ended because they recognised each other (... From where?) and because Jill needed a meat shield and a new gun. It isn't even like he was pivotal to the final battle, Chris is shown in multiple games to be capable of handling these things himself (though how well he does usually depends on the player, but still) and it isn't like they couldn't have pulled in Claire for unnecessary gymnastics (that backflip she did to avoid Dylan's arm/tentacle?), designated driver status and an extra pair of hands. She was mostly just with Rebecca to give her the password and high-five her at the end and because the writer's misogyny said only women showing their tits could fight.

At the very least, Leon should have been killed by Maria since the vaccine hadn't fully cured him and he was clearly outclassed, there's no way he would have survived that fight without all his plot armour.

I never said 1998 Leon looked good, I'm simply saying that he wore the "square jaw and high cheekbones with the softer jawline" look better than whatever the fuck the remake of 4 is using as a protagonist. If I didn't know Crapcom only partnered with NVIDIA recently, I'd be calling it an AI design, though I suppose it could have been more covert usage? (This is about the remake, btw.
