So, you want to be a long-term traveller? If you think this is what people call comfort zone you’re wrong. because by doing this you will find out who you are but most importantly who you are not and who you’ll never be. if you don’t know how it is to stay in the middle of the road without a map if you have never let yourself get lost into the wilderness without a chance to be saved by someone else instead of you stay home. if you’re afraid you’ll lose the best pieces of advice from your friends, their calls, the late night meetings, their laughter when something goes wrong, your mother’s voice, your father’s caress, your siblings’ bundle of joy don’t do it. if you think you will never be able to have a serious relationship while on the road but only love affairs without a happy ending if you think love is just an old school concept, too staind and dispassionate for this new century don’t do it. if it doesn’t get easier to say ‘goodbye’ and ‘see you soon’ in front of every airport, railway station, hippie van, boat, ship or sailboat from this world forget about it. but if you suddenly start feeling hungry for change and foolishness, if notions like “that isn’t possible” make you grin from ear to ear while making your backpack lighter then wait patiently. if you never felt the urge of running to the nearest train station and leave all your clothes at home do something else. if you think it’s nonessential to explore the world and discover new cultures if you don’t want to learn new languages and develop new skills you’re not ready. when it is truly time you will wake up one morning take your backpack, open the door, leave the maps in the drawers and the keys in your pocket, and without thinking too much you will travel until you die or the world ends while you’re doing it. because my dear long-term traveler, there is no other way and there never was.

“The ‘What are you so afraid of?’ 

ExerciseGrab a piece of paper and write the numbers one through ten on the left side of the page. At the top, title it: “What am I so afraid of?” This is your Worst Case Scenario list. This is your list of things that make you think “They’re all going to laugh at me.” These are your largest fears, and you’ve got ten minutes to write them down.

Go.

Line by line, walk yourself through each one. Would they really laugh at you? They would? How do you feel about that? Line by line, have a conversation about all of your fears. Would you really be homeless? Would you really be alone? Do you really need that much money? This is a list of your tradeoffs. And they are the biggest things standing in your way.”

From the reflective ramblings of my freshman self, to every subsequent Semester in Reviews, and after some modest back-and-forth, I’ve decided it’s only appropriate that I share (who even reads this??) this last (truly, LAST) School Year: In Review. 

Here, is an out-of-context log of some lessons and realisations, among many many others:

The Real World was always here and I’ve never not been in it.

Just because you don’t regret it doesn’t mean you’re glad it happened

Always try to make conversation with your Uber or Lyft driver.

Scheduling is important.

body <==> mind

It rarely hurts to be nice.

FOMO (no more)

Fight for what you want.

Don’t put people on pedestals; respect and learn from those whom you admire but realize that nobody is immune to faults, some people just try harder to hide them.

everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses; everyone has their own stories of battles lost and battles won

Confidence manifests in the little things, like mannerisms and embracing your quirks and potential to be seen as weird.

Making yourself vulnerable is brave.

relatedly: you get what you give

Most of my experiences in life have been, thus far, sheltered and soft, even if I remember some of them sharply.

Emotions are humanizing; expressing them is strong, not weak.

The past is nonexistent and the future is imagined. 

Just because people avoid getting hurt, and just because being hurt sucks, it doesn’t have to be a feeling to be fearful of.

How you spend your days is how you spend your life; Few things can be achieved without good habits.

Most of the time, opportunities will have reached their end before the letter is mailed out and reaches you, if the letter is even stamped and mailed at all.

Communication is fucking important.

Nuances make all the difference.

Care (or affection/liking/love(??)) is a choice.

Beer is good for your digestive track, or something.

Sometimes smaller, inconsequential, level 1 questions can lead to the more interesting level 3 questions.

Writing can be a cathartic experience.

Reading writings from your younger self will most likely be very embarrassing, cringe-worthy, and eye-brow-furrowing.

A single, relayed observation can quickly change your perception of someone.

It’s hard to know where your [physical and/or emotional] limit is until you’re regretfully [literally and/or figuratively] praying over the porcelain throne — and even then, does anyone remember when the threshold was breached?

Gifts are not only a reflection of the sender, but also of the receiver.

The ~magical~ moment when it’s storming outside and you’re sitting next to the window in the corner of the top floor of a local coffee house, composing a letter, reflecting on the year, and the song (posted before this) that most perfectly describes the feels of late begins to play through the speakers of the house.
