Soulmate. I have dreaded all of these days that have come and gone since last August 31st. Especially today. You are no longer the old man I have teased to my advantage. Today, I have lived one more day in this life than you got to and what a fucking way to be alive I feel. I never imagined that it could even be such a thing. Compared to your 25 years on this earth, mine have yet to equate. I know that I shouldn’t compare our journeys, but I’m envious. You have made it look so easy. With your scorpion soul, you could lit fire under all the wonders of the world like you had lit up mine without permission. It was always about equality with us. I guess it’s your turn to tease my old ass.

A year ago today, you were showing your sister the backroads to get to her job in her new car. We made plans that day to catch a movie. Stuck in traffic during the annual dot parade with a scary driver, you couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there. Frustrated, you made her pick me up since you were around the way. You needed a smoke break to step away from the shenanigans so we walked over to the park. There, we dissected your frustrations as I tried to reassure you not to stress it. Your sister reminds me of me, a tad bit scary but she meant well. Considering you were always right, it was hard for you to watch her not have more confidence in herself. We made it all in one piece that day.

We would end up watching Wonder Woman that day and in an argument in the rain soon after. There, another shift began. What happened in that stupid movie that I didn’t want to even go see in the first place was foretelling. Yet all I ever saw was red then. I have yet to go back to a movie theatre since.

I hate today. I hate what a moment it holds. I hate that it isn’t something more grand to match your soul. I helplessly wonder where you are and if you’re okay. I recklessly write in hopes you’ll hear my calls out to you. In another realm I imagine that you are somewhere with more peace in your soul waiting for the rest of us to catch on but you have granny, big bro, and skip to keep you level headed. These days will keep on coming and it’s only about to be summer. The air will be thicker and suffocating and more days like today will come holding significance of our last adventures and trials. What a concept. I miss you. I love you. Please come meet me somewhere half way. Come back… if not, please be alright.

It is technically Spring now though New England’s weather begs to differ. The clock has spring forward an hour so night chooses to come later. I occasionally step out of my mind to complete daily tasks expected of my reality but as routine, I jump back into a mine of explosive insanity. I recall dates and times featuring you like appointments I have written down on a calendar. That goes for the million memories we created playing back in my head at all times of the day. I woke up this morning with a heavy soul, I wonder if you know; April 10th today marks a year since I got my first taste of what it felt like to be on the back of you and your red Suzuki bike. It is a thrill like no other. I always dreamt that the motorbike life I experienced back in Nam would somehow manifest here. And it couldn’t have been more meant to be than for you to share that with me. So with your red nike windbreaker and red helmet on, I felt like a total badass. Who cares how I looked, my ass was about to poke on that bike (let you tell it 😂). I can’t tell you how long it stayed poking before my behind was too sore to keep my back arched. I can’t tell you how controlling I mentally was every single time you came to a stop and how much you hated my guts for not being a better passenger. Yet you gave me a once in a lifetime moment to be your partner in crime on that bike even though I was sweating balls and highly cranky. But it never occurred to me then that we would be up against time. Not at 24 or 25. And maybe that was naive of me, but to me you could not be touched. It never occurred to me that these rides on your bike would be so limited. That there would be an end, a final ride. I fucking hate time. I fucking hate everything about today and what it means to me. I hate that time is moving so fast. For the first time, I fucking hate the idea of summer and the weather getting warmer and the day getting longer. I hate that it has been 7+ months without a single conversation with you. And to keep thinking of my next move in a universe without you, I am quite frankly insane. I still cannot believe my reality is permanently without you at 25. Fuck this life. I do not want to be alive today.

As I drove around for parking, I saw you peeking from a distance. You are red, bright, and large. When I saw you, you just seem significantly close. It is as if I could get to you. So I began to drive to you. The closer I got, it seem you were just as far as the moon could ever be to this earth. Tonight, I know that it’s you. I was looking for you in the clear skies tonight and couldn’t find you. And then bam! The next thing you know, there you are so effortlessly and blatantly beautiful. I wish the naked eye could capture you into a photo instead of my phone. It does you absolutely no justice. Guess that goes for everything right?
