Genuine question, you're mad at an MC for making the slant eyes gesture (which I completely understand I'm half Korean and have been called "slopes" and "slits" at my job so I get it) but you posted a pic of Marc's 2013 helmet with Marc making the same gesture on the back of it. How is the design of him making the same slant eyes gesture not equally as racist? Is there lore behind the helmet that I'm missing? I don't know as much about mm93 so I'm genuinely curious why it is acceptable for mm to have it as a helmet design but then not ok for the MC to do the same thing.

I don’t think that helmet design is acceptable either. Marc actually apologized in 2013 to those who were offended, but even so, I still don't believe choosing that graphic for a helmet was okay in any way.

That said, it is understandable that due to the limitations of the era and general awareness at the time, Marc (and like many people still today) lacked a clear understanding of anti-Asian racism. Furthermore, he was riding for a Japanese factory team back then, and the fact that the Japanese team/staff accepted that graphic reflects the broader societal lack of awareness at the time. I also believe that after the helmet controversy, mm himself became much more cautious regarding such gestures and imagery.

Unfortunately, this outdated mindset still persists in many parts of Europe today, largely because systemic discrimination against Asians has long been normalized in everyday European life (and to prevent anyone from jumping on me for saying this, I speak strictly from my own lived experience as someone residing in Europe).

The reason I separate this specific grandstand incident from mm himself is twofold:

I can’t be certain whether Marc was personally aware of what happened, and the person who made the gesture was the grandstand MC, not Marc himself.

During my brief personal interactions with Marc at the Sachsenring, I did not experience any differential or prejudiced attitude toward Asians from him. On the contrary, he treated me with genuine respect.
