Is Your Character Signed to the Yukari System?: Yes
Relationship Status: Engaged to Sonoda Fujiko
Profession: Social Worker at the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare
Personality Rundown: When he was younger, Haruo was very ill-tempered. Something of a neighborhood thug, he was prone to getting into fights and sticking his nose where it didn’t belong. His rebellious nature was inborn, but his lack of supervision only exacerbated it. Over time, however, he began to mellow out some, to become the earnest charmer he is today. Although he still isn’t very emotive when it comes to facial expressions, his mood can be easily read through his voice and body language. Fascinated by psychology, he is curious about the minds of most everyone around him, although his piercing glare can sometimes intimidate them, rather than draw them to him.
Backstory: Nobori Kazuki and Otani Akane were paired when they were still in high school. As luck would have it, they were in the same high school, although she was a year older than him. They grew to care for each other very much, but Akane wasn’t quite ready for marriage. She told him that they would wait until he graduated to make everything official. During his final year, however, she used that time to experiment with other relationships and ended up pregnant. In a fright, she told Kazuki that the child was his. They married, and Haruo was born. Kazuki and Akane were very fond of each other, but ultimately incompatible. As a fisherman, he was away more often than not, and Akane found that unacceptable. They separated, and she took their son with her to Tokyo.
His life was far from easy. Akane aimed to become a nurse, but it was difficult for her to find a school that would accept her, given the black mark of divorce on her record. While she eventually managed to enroll, that meant that she was unable to spend much time with her son—the very thing she divorced Kazuki for. Instead, Haruo was watched over by Akane’s friend, Megumi, who left him largely to his own devices. Desperate for some semblance of stability, Akane requested to be paired again, and met Amano Jin. Kindhearted yet stern, Jin disapproved of Haruo’s wild streak and did what he could to rein in his behavior and mold him into a more model citizen. For the most part, he was successful.
Haruo’s image evolved from intimidating delinquent to stoic bad boy. After all, he was never truly malicious—he was simply overwhelmed with emotion and chose an improper outlet. His middle and high school life passed largely uneventfully. He had been popular for his looks, but because of the Yukari System, it was rare for him to receive anything close to aserious love confession. Confused by the way the law worked, pairing his mother “incorrectly” the first time around but “successfully” the second time, he decided to work for the government as a social worker upon exiting university. It would help, he thought, to give him some closure and better understanding of the way their society operated, even if only slightly.
Because he didn’t know the circumstances of his birth, upon meeting Nobori Una, the two of them discovered a series of facts and coincidences that lead them to believe they were half-siblings. At Una’s request, Haruo visited Izumo, where he found out from Kazuki that he was an illegitimate child, further confusing his opinion on the system.
He gets along well with his partner, Fujiko, although he sometimes finds himself wondering if they truly are the best people for each other. Because they see eye to eye on most everything, he tries to push those thoughts from his mind. Science is wonderful, but even it can be flawed.
