🍷We are super thrilled to announce our upcoming event, “Ain’t afraid of no ghost,” in May with Yokai noise artist Banetoriko, French-Taiwanese publisher Passepartout, Kozma Liu from Dope Purple and Hom Yu from Mong Tong.

Through Banetoriko’s noise music, the Yokai are brought to life. Tamaki Ueda embraces the dream evocation that’s possible when loops of blurred texture collide with the gnaw and groan of energised metal, while mantric, dissociated vocals, and the oppressive weight of deep breath, gather around these compositions like a ghost’s shroud. The scrape and scratch of Ueda’s self-made metal instrument, the Banetek, gives these improvisations a unique throb, even as their mood, of introverted focus and elaboration of minutiae, gestures towards broader histories of noise and abstract art. While she’s been making noise for some time, since the nineties, Banetoriko was formalised as a project in 2011, while Ueda lived in Los Angeles. Relocating to Osaka in 2021, she’s carved out an utterly unique space for herself in Japanese noise, and her music contains an absolutely elemental vibration.

Solène Huang has translated Théophile Gautier’s eerie 19th-century tale La Morte amoureuse (The Dead Woman in Love) into Mandarin, now published by the French-Taiwanese publishing house Passepartout. To launch this release, she will read selected passages from this haunting tale of a female vampire, alternating with readings by Aurélien Rossanino of the original French version. Gautier’s flamboyant words will be carried by an improvised soundtrack from Kozma Liu, a sonic meteor from Taiwan’s underground—perhaps moved that afternoon by the supernatural presence we’ll be invoking. Throughout the performance, we'll be screening extracts from rare vampire films, for a truly immersive experience.
Hom Yu is a Taiwanese musician best known for his work with the psychedelic duo Mong Tong. His music blends mysticism, Taiwanese folklore, and vintage media aesthetics into hypnotic soundscapes that blur the line between reality and fiction. Combining field recordings, found samples, and analog synthesis, Hom Yu creates a unique sonic language often described as “superstition music,” rooted deeply in local culture yet resonating globally.
