Snow Beneath the Mountains: The Founding of Yƫrei Estate
A train hisses, snow dances in the air as the wind blows while the sun shines on the snow dusted village of Warendorf. The year was 1939 and Europe was on the edge of another war. The town was silent, still recovering from the scars of the Great War from years before. A tall figure in a long, military-cut coat stepped off the train into the cold snow. Harunobu Kakehashi was here on a mission, he had come from Japan as part of a military equestrian exchange, sent to study German cavalry tactics, but for him it was more than that. He was fascinated with German horses, there was something beautiful in their power, something noble about the way they moved. Harunobu didnât view horses merely as instruments of war, he saw them as companions, allies to work alongside rather than tools to be used. Still, it wasnât his place to decide their fate.
By the time the war had begun, strangling the world with a hand of terror and fear, Harunobu travelled, witnessing everything. Still forced to study and train horses for war, it broke his heart sending them off, because he knew what their fates would be. As fast as the war broke out, it ended, leaving the world in ashes and ruins. With no more demand for cavalry horses, Harunobu was stranded, left forgotten in a foreign land far from home. He found himself back in the village that had first set him on this path, though it now felt like a distant memory. The streets were quieter than he remembered, the air heavy with the weight of time The snow sparkled beneath the bright sun as he stepped off the train once more, the cold air biting at his skin. His breath hung in the frosty air and his hands trembling from the cold. He was a lost man. Out of pity from the town he was given an old estate, left in ruins from the war with no purpose. He named it Yƫrei Estate, ghost in his language, not to invoke fear, but to honor the past. With his heart and respect for the animals he began to rebuild it. His purpose now was not to train them to fight, but to move with grace and trust. Harunobu never meant to stay in Germany. But love has a way of rewriting plans and in the soft breath of his horses, and the rhythm of hooves echoing on new soil, he found the peace he was looking for.
Years passed by, the land was growing to new flourishing heights nurturing both the horses and his spirit. The estate grew, becoming a symbol of strength and grace amidst the shadow of war. The horses he trained with care became sought after not for battle, but for their elegance in dressage and show-jumping.
Now, Yƫrei Estate was in the hands of his granddaughter, Helen. She walked the grounds with the same reverence he had, her footsteps echoing the rhythm of the hooves that had once been so familiar to him. The estate had prospered, the land now vibrant and alive with the same quiet peace Harunobu had sought so long ago.
