Yuri!!! On Cards: The Final Master Post

And so it concludes. With the work of so many artists and writers from the Yuri on the Web Discord server, working together across time (zones) and space (continents), the full deck has been assembled, both as art and stories. This post will include links to everything.

A big THANK YOU to every artist and writer on this project for participating and letting all us mortals enjoy your wonderful works. It's been such a pleasure to do this project. And thank you to everyone who indulged my dumb idea initially. Me making an entire deck by myself would've been dumb (my poor hand) but with all your help this became such a fun group project where no hands were lost.

A special thanks to Lil for being the co-admin on this project, managing everything AO3 because I am useless at that and being there for me to ping pong ideas and desicions off of. I'm not a very desicive person on my own so I really appreciated having someone to share my thoughts with.

Another special thanks to Nic for also being co-admin assembling the entire deck, including making the frames used on every card and making them look damn good. And also for making all the non-picture cards to complete the project. I bow down to you, bestie.

Also, to any curious tumblrinas who have followed along, thank your for your interest! We're glad you like our silly little ideas. And to any new curious tumblrinas, thank you too! The works in this post are made by many different artists and writers and while they're all made from the same outlines, don't expect one big connected universe with no continuity errors. The reigns for this project were pretty loose and it's all just for fun and we hope you'll have some too.

Ahhh I finally get to post this :D It was an honor to be able to contribute to the amazing project that is Yuri!!! On Cards from the Yuri!!! On The Web Discord server!

You can go check out the rest of the cards from this project via a masterpost that will be created this Sunday (Sept 10). There are companion fics on AO3 to go along with all the cards! I'd like to give a massive shoutout to @arom-antix and @lines-on-ice for basically putting this all together and making this amazing idea a reality. I know Arrow credits me as one of the admins of this project, but I really only made a Google Drive and did a little research for the artists on how to format their cards haha

I had a ton of fun coming up with Mari's design as the Knight of Spades. I knew right away that I wanted Mari's design to reflect her Japanese heritage since the suit of Spades is a fully Japanese cast.

I've cut me talking about the art itself and my thought process while working on it so I don't nuke your dash, but if you'd like to read my ramblings feel free to

Making Mari a samurai was an easy choice since, one, that's basically what a knight was in Japan (albeit there was no legal binding between a daimyo and his samurai), and, two, I've always HC'd Mari as a protective older sister in the sense she'd be fairly hands off until someone made the mistake of bullying her little Yuuri.

I wanted her armor to be blue since that was the overarching color scheme for Spades, but choosing what blues to use was.. Difficult. There needed to be enough contrast between the different pieces of her armor to show that the armor is made of multiple parts while keeping the hues and brightness values close enough to still look cohesive. I also wanted to keep the blues relatively low saturated to bring our Mari's blonde highlights.

(As I was coloring her armor I realized half way through that I basically drew a Samurott ginjinka oops (￣▽￣*)ゞ)

I had originally intended for the sarashi (the belt) to be pure white, however when I put all the base colors down I realized the white was too much and pulled your eyes away from Mari's overall form. I knew having the belt be pure blue would make the belt blend in too much with the rest of the armor, so I ended up making the belt mostly blue with white accents as a compromise. I still wish the belt could have been white, but oh well.

As for the katana.. That was originally going to be pure blue, but like the belt problem, I had issues keeping the katana from looking muddied. I ended up trying five different variations of black/dark gray until I settled on what you see above lol. It was really difficult making the hilt of the katana look nice because if I went too dark with the blacks I would lose detail on the hilt, but if I went too light I would lose the contrast with the hilt's blues. As for the saya (scabbard/sheathe) I wanted it to be black, but I ended up matching it to Mari's armor instead because a black saya with a mostly black hilt somehow made the entire katana look flat.

The color palates I used for everything else was just me eyeballing her fleshtone and hair color through various screenshots I ripped directly from the show.

The background gave the the most trouble out of everything though because I'm not particularly great at making interesting, minimalistic backgrounds for my art. The card looked to plain without some sort of variation of color behind Mari, but since her armor was already so complex I needed a background that didn't take away from those complexities and didn't muddy the entire piece. I had originally planned to do a sumi-e type background, however I found that no matter what I did the sumi-e designs took away focus from Mari. Eventually I settled on a default abstract Procreate brush and drew lines until something stuck.

Overall I had a blast making this and also the borders for the rest of the cards! I learned a lot about how to format and prep digital canvases for making a card deck, too lol

Ace of Hearts Christophe - Allure of the Soul -

Being Ace of the Realm of Desires, Chris wishes for people to find their path to love. As a passionate dancer, he likes to be the head-turner at the Grand Palace Festival's masquerade ball.

As the Ace of the Realm of Dreams, Minami is a bard with great aspirations. In his cheerful songs he tells stories of dreams and hope, inspiring others to follow their path to happiness and success. His own source of inspiration and main muse is, of course, King Yuuri, whom he admires like no one else.

Yuri!!! On Cards collaboration!

So, I know I've been pretty inactive recently, at least in posting my own art but for good reason! In the Yuri on the Web Discord server artists and writers alike have all collaborated to illustrate a deck of cards and write stories for each of them. And as a resident artist myself, I couldn't not take the opportunity to draw for this project UuU

Oh and if anyone was wondering, yes, I am to blame for inflicting this giant project onto the server BUT I REGRET NOTHING AND NEITHER WILL YOU IF YOU CHECK OUT EVERYONE ELSE'S WORKS. Trust me, they are amazing! The masterpost can be found here!

Okay, I lied. First, I'd heavily recommend for you to check out the guideline posts, both the general and artists' and even the writers' if you're up to it to get a grasp of the perimeters of this project. There's also some vague lore and AU stuff about the whole thing to find which will give you context for why the art looks the way it does to a certain extent.

You can also just jump right in and take everything as I ramble about it which, I mean, I won't stop you, the guideline posts aren't short. I will not blame you. You can still just look at the art. If that's your choice, go on ahead!

First up!

Ace of the Kingdom Otabek, The Deep Shadow

Being of the Kingdom of Diamonds, he's skillful and sharp. He moves quietly as a shadow and is just as mysterious.

Okay, I can't comment much on how he actually is, you'll have find that out by reading his fic(let?). They were supposed to be ficlets but as writers tend to do, none of us could manage that so take "ficlet" with a big grain of salt for every written work.

I've, by the way, not read any of the ficlets for this project beside my own so I'll get to experience the reveal with y'all and I'm gonna perish waiting.

Anyway, about the art. The yellow of course comes from the Kingdom of Diamonds' designated colour. As for the outfit, it's based on this handsome fellow I found who's supposed to be a Kazakh archer which I thought fit Otabek's whole shadow thing perfectly (and Writingfromtheshadow's fic Equivalent Exchange has me in an iron grip and I don't want to be released).

If there are any Kazakhs in the audience, you are free to laugh at me for any inaccuracies or missteps, I am but a humble little not-Kazakh, I don't expect to have gotten it all right UuU

Next up!

King Yuuri, Wanderer of Dreams

The ruler of his realm, he is as the mind flows. Kind and benevolent yet of fickle thoughts, the spirals of the subconscious are ones he both masters and bows to.

Again, gonna be waiting for his fic with everyone else but like. It's Yuuri. Anxiety is kind of a given.

In terms of art, I don't know if you can tell but this was where I started writing my will because oh my stars, what did I get myself into. If you follow me or my art, you'll know that I don't draw lineless. Like ever. And apparently I decided this project on a deadline that others were depending on me making look nice was the place to go all out.

And the worst part is that I'm not even mad at it so I have no argument to not do it again.

Anyway, the blue is from the designated colour of spades and yes, you've guessed right as to why this colour was picked for this suit. I'm predictable, leave me alone. As for the rest, the outfit is inspired by traditional Japanese dress that the Internet told me about (again, Japanese may laugh at me all they want UuU Your culture is very cool but also there was so much info, I hope I got it at least a bit right).

Also I spent like eight hours looking at hanakotoba for this and I've never been this happy about a decision I regretted so much while I was having to draw that many flowers. And you know I had to include The Gay Flower^(TM).

The Japanese iris is now Yuuri's btw.

All the flowers used are: Japanese irises, Jasmine flowers, Forget-me-nots, cherry blossoms, white roses, green carnations and blue roses (Viktor's flower. Read: I am predictable).

And finally!

Queen Minako, Tamer of Minds

Of the Realm of Dreams, she sees your fears, the snares laid by the subconscious and, strict and blunt as she is, she clears a path for the motivated and lets no potential go to waste.

Again, haven't read a word of the fic.

This one was by far the one that I made the fastest and I would've loved to do more with it but like deadlines. I'm gracefully skipping over the fact that I set the deadline and am fully to blame for being late.

But, as with Yuuri, blue is for spades. And since I wanted her to have a leotard but still match Yuuri and make her outfit look even slightly Japanese inspired, sheer fabric to the rescue! With cherry blossoms, of course, because CSP had the pattern preinstalled UuU

And I don't know if it worked but I tried to make her hair both look like her signature style, traditional Japanese hairstyles I found on the good ol' Interwebs and then kind of a spade by having that middle stick be the stem and the hair the spade's butt.

Also this probably goes without saying but the ranks of the characters are just titles. Yuuri is not married to Minako, she is just the Queen and he the King, don't worry.

Again, a BIG thank you to everyone who also participated, it was so fun to work together on this and see everyone's progress! Nic and Lil, you're amazing, thank you so much for everything you've done for this!

Yuri!!! On Cards: Writers

Before reading this, the outline of the project can be found here which you will need to read as well. This post describes all the specifications for the stories specifically.

First: the prompts

As mentioned in the main information post, there are four kingdoms, one for each suit, each of which has a designated realm. Based on the suit and its King, the kingdoms also have certain traits characteristic of their domain which can be interpreted as much or as little as you want.

For the sake of reference, the cards of each realm will be included before the prompt:

In the Kingdom of Spades, known as the Realm of Dreams by most, knowledge of the mind and intricacies thereof is paramount. Though a seemlingly calm people, ebbing and flowing as of streaming thought, dreams are known to turn, a nightmare inbound for those who do not heed the warnings. The King of its kin, known as He Who Wanders the Space Between, is as mysterious as he is open, private as he shares, deep in the shallows of the phyche. Should one come to meet the souls of this Kingdom, beware of your innocence and the purity of mind as, though they may protect it, stings of curruption may as well make them your doom.

There is no place they cannot reach, obsession claiming one too many as joy and fullfilment turns to longing and despair. Ruler of the land, known as He Who Reads the Heart, leaves no desire untouched, bringing forth truth and love as he strikes down the hateful among. Should you encounter the fickle people of this realm, complex to the point of distraction, may your heart guide you true and let you walk free of the yearning aches of your mortal soul.

In the Kingdom of Clubs, the Realm of Stories and ruled by threes, one must always use their critical eye. A place of entertainment, fun and laughter, dishonesty runs rife as lies, deceit and trickery is built into the people's cores, twisting, turning and manipulating the narratives they weave. King of their ilk, known as He Who Fibs the Fibber, spins legends from grain, brings fun, dance and song as his critters follow and exposes the beguiler for the corruption of the art. Should you meet his people you are sure to take away the most fantastical of tales but beware of their spiel as they may soon make you the fool of their tragedies.

The Kingdom of Diamonds, known as the Realm of Treasures in many capacities, is a talented people, thriving on competition and striving for achievement. It is an easy origin of greed, those who reach for grandeur and riches beyond their means bound for a tragic fate. The young orphaned King, He Who Humbles the Deluded, is as gifted as he is cunning, successful beyond his years as he peers into rich shadow. Should your path cross that of this kingdom's people, you may find your searches serendipitous but be mindful that a corrupt soul finds no more than the rotten returns of its sacrifices.

Free of the restraint of a realm are the Jokers:

Makkachin, the Joker of Companionship, has seen many places and accompanied many a soul. Originally of the Kingdom of Hearts, her care for others runs deep as does her ability to soften any frozen chest and rigid mind.

Vicchan, the Joker of Memory, will linger wherever he goes and remain in the hearts of those he meets. Originally of the Kingdom of spades, he, as the ruler of his fount, sees the mind and saunters where no mortal can, revealing secrets yet untold.

Again, these are up for interpretation and should not be considered hard rules you must follow. Think of them more as those fancy descriptions of places found in old fairy tales that are vague and exaggerated on purpose for the imagination of the reader. If something doesn't quite fit, may it rest in the descriptions of the past.

There is also no specific writing style or time period required but keep in mind the aesthetic of the setting. Think of this as a Royalty AU. You decide what that entails.

And as mentioned in the main post, you are highly encouraged to reach out to the other authors of your suit to make the kingdom seem connected, especially if you reference other characters than your own in your ficlet. Writers of typically connected characters (i.e. Viktor and Yuuri) are also very welcome to keep that connection and work with the writer for the other card.

In terms of rating, please keep them rated for General audiences or Teens and up as Mature and Explicit make the ficlets inaccessible to some, especially younger readers. If you're unsure if your writing is too close to M or E, please reach out to Arrow or Lil on the server or directly.

As for technicalities, the stories are meant to be ficlets (100-1000 words), one made for each character which ideally contains some description of them and their place in the kingdom. Otherwise you have creative freedom in terms of content. If you feel inspired to write longer fics, you're welcome to do so as well but they will not be the main fic connected to the character through this event. They will however be linked in the final master post of links if you wish.

If you have ideas for stories that take place in the kingdoms or the universe but aren't necessarily about a single character, you're very welcome, in fact encouraged to write those as well. They will be linked in the master post as well if you wish, much like the longer fics.

Your ficlets can be posted to almost any site though it's recommended that you use either AO3 or Wattpad as those are what the admin team for this event are familiar with. If you have questions about platforms/websites feel free to contact Arrow or Lil. If you don't have an online platform where you post your writing, this blog can post it for you with links to your blogs or profiles.

As stated in the main post, the deadline for your ficlets is the 31st of August. Please keep the final versions off social media and your fanfiction site of choice until this deadline. By the start of September, you're free to post but please have them posted before the 8th of September as the final master post of links will be posted on the 9th. Posting later can result in your link not being part of reblogged posts. As for where you can submit your works once finished and posted, please send the link to the ficlet to Arrow or Lil in the server or directly and it will be added to the final master post. For those without a platform, please send them as either a Word or Google document. If formatting is important to the fic, send a PDF.*

And that should be all. If any changes happen they will be posted on the blog and linked here as well so that everything can be found in one place. If information changes a * will be appended on the outdated information.

Yuri!!! On Cards: Artists

The prompts are as follows:

The Kingdom of Spades

This is the Realm of Dreams, ruled by the Wanderer of such. The people of this realm wear blues of all hues, both dark as night and light as the breeze. In the essence of dreams, their clothes mirror the duality of the mind, however ones thoughts wind with the wind.

The Kingdom of Hearts

As of its suit, here lies the Realm of Desire and their fabrics are dyed all variants of reds, mirroring the fickleness of the mortal heart as both deep bloody maroons and soft rouges tint their souls. Their clothes are equally perplexing and leave you to wonder with the reflections of reality.

The Kingdom of Clubs

Through the guise of the lens, written word and spoken tale is the Realm of Stories, one shrouded in greens of the deepest forests, vernal leaves and trimmed fields. Their clothes also weave, twist and bend with their tarradiddle and the rule of three governs the land as much as it does the spoken word.

The Kingdom of Diamonds

In the Realm of Treasure, one can never know which kind. May it be of heart or gold, yellows, bright or mellow are rich here as are the fabrics of their garments. Their style is sharp as their talent, the mysteriously green gaze of The Orphan King it's true reflection.

These descriptions are up for any interpretation but for the sake of cohesion, it's encouraged that you speak with the fellow artists of your suit an try to find some common ground in your depictions.

Now for some technicalities. All cards will of course feature their given character with at most a simple background for the sake of readability. They will be featured as a typical illustration therefore not using the mirrored motif that's often seen on playing cards. This post of Pride Knights' pride playing cards show the format of the illustrations well.

A special stipulation for the Ace cards: As the ace is often a unique card, the illustrations for these will feature both the assigned character as the focus and the King of the given suit in some capacity. It could be in the background as that would set it apart from the other backgroundless cards but again, they're unique cards so there's a lot of room for creativity. You're very welcome to reach out to your fellow Ace illustrators and find a common theme for this if you wish.

Also, it's not reqired that, say, a knight must wear armour in this deck but keep in mind the title of the card and the theme of royalty as you design.

Your file should ideally be 69,6mm by 95mm / 2,74" by 3,74" which is 822px by 1122px at a resolution of 300dpi. The illustration should be kept within a centered space of 54mm by 79,4mm / 2,13" by 3,13" which is 638px by 938px at 300dpi. A template has been shared and pinned in the YOI CARDS thread in the yoi-general channel by Nic who will also be designing the borders used on every card and assembling them once you finish your illustrations.

If you're having trouble importing the template, download it and open the file in your program of choice and that should fix any transparency problems. If it continues to not work, Arrow or Nic will gladly help.

If you can't make the file fit these specific measurements then keep the ratios intact and draw on a larger canvas as the illustration can be resized should it be needed. Just keep in mind that fine detail may be lost once it's sized down.

It's also strongly recommended that you make your illustration have a transparent background and therefore save it as a png file to preserve this transparency. If it's truly not possible it can be worked around but it significantly increases the workload for Nic when assembling the cards.

If you're not sure how to make a transparent background in your software, Arrow and Nic will gladly help. Arrow works primarily in Clip Studio Paint and Nic primarily in Procreate so those specific programs are their strong suits.

As stated in the main outline post, the deadline for your illustrations will be the 31st of August. As for where you can submit your drawings, please send the file in either the YOI CARDS thread on the server or directly to Arrow or Nic.*

Also, please keep your final illustrations off social medias and such until this 31st of August deadline. Nic will then assemble the cards and you will at the latest get them back on the 7th of September. Once you've gotten it back you're free to post though keep in mind that the master post of links will be posted on the 9th meaning it's recommended that you post on the 8th at the latest to ensure your links don't get lost in a late edit. This blog will also reblog the artists posts themselves. If you don't have an online platform where you post art, this blog can post it for you with links to your blogs or profiles.

And that should be all. If any changes happen they will be posted on the blog and linked here as well so that everything can be found in one place. If information changes a * will be appended on the outdated information.
