6 Words of Advice From Tilopa: (in Tibetan, these are 6 words, the shortest I can render them in English is 8 words, using Ken McLeod’s translation)
Don’t Recall;
Imagine;
Think;
Examine;
Control;
Just Rest.
Don’t re-examine the past (recall), or dream about what will happen in the future (imagine) nor dwell on what is happening in your day to day life (think). This takes care of the three times: past, present and future. Don’t examine refers to passive meditations such as watching the breath, watching feelings arise and fall away, etc. Don’t control (the word in Tibetan is “gom" which is usually translated as "meditation”, but Ken here, rather brilliantly, has seen the true intent of Tilopa and rendered it “control”) refers to active meditations involving visualizations, mantra recitation, pranayama, etc. Drop all of these 5 activities and simply rest in bare awareness.
On the other hand, it is interesting to note that you must go through the first 5 before you can achieve the 6th. You must remember to sit (past); think of what it is you want from the practice, or at the very least, how long you plan to sit for this session (future); and make yourself do it now (present). Once sitting, you examine your posture and breath; focus the mind while deciding to let go (control) before you can let go and…just rest.
