the L word | behind-the-scenes
18 years ago, "Talking, Laughing, Loving, Breathing, Fighting, Fucking, Crying, Drinking, Writing, Winning, Losing, Cheating, Kissing, Thinking, Dreaming" or better known as "The L Word" was aired on Showtime.
ā Akwaeke Emezi, The Death of Vivek Oji
[ text ID: I'm not what anyone thinks I am. I never was. I didn't have the mouth to put it into words, to say what was wrong, to change the things I felt I needed to change. And every day it was difficult, walking around and knowing that people saw me one way, knowing that they were wrong, so completely wrong, that the real me was invisible to them. It didn't even exist to them. So: If nobody sees you, are you still there? ]
i need to talk about reply 1988
reply 1988 is probably my favorite drama, tv show, everything, of all. because everytime i think about reply 1988, i thing about my life and myself. this kdrama is that art that really touched you in the soul. because reply 1988 is about the friendships we have that we know is going to last forever, even though times changes. is about blood ties, but also about found family. itās about growing up, finding yourself and your place in the world. teenage isnāt easy. that time when we have to deal with time passing by, with self-discovery, it isnāt easy. reply 1988 is not about romance or whoās gonna end up with who, itās about how ephemeral youth is. and thatās ok.
reply 1988 is about that painfull nostalgia, that house you grew up, that neighbourhood and the friends you used to have. even though time passed, the importance of those things stays forever, and thatās what matters. itās not about material sutff, itās about the magnitude of memories.Ā
ālonging for that time and longing for that street, is not because i miss a younger version of myself. thatās the place of my fatherās youth, of my motherās youth, of my friendsā youth, itās the place that holds the youth of everything i love.
in that landscape, where we wonāt be able to gather like that again, i regret being unable to say my final farewell. to the things that are already gone, to the time that has already passed, i want to say a belated farewell. goodbye, my youth.āĀ

Do you not have any friends? Is this your way of making friends?
āi persist and resist the temptation to ask you if one thing had been different would everything be different today? we were something, don't you think so? rosĆ© flowing with your chosen family and it would've been sweet if it could've been me.ā

deokseon-ah. I like you. Iām saying I like you. hey do you what iāve done because of you?Ā
I waited an hour by the front door every day to go to school with you. I waited every night until you came home from studying. I couldnāt sleep at all because I was worried about you.Ā āwhy is she so late?āĀ ādid she fall asleep again?,ā I thought of nothing but you. just you. when I ran into you, by chance; on the bus and when we went to the concert, also when I got that shirt from you on my birthday.Ā
I was really .. so happy I thought I was crazy. I wanted to see you more than a dozen times a day. I was happy just to see you. I wanted to tell you this a long time ago. I really like you. I love you.
iāll be perfectly fine, then i remember:
āLonging for that time, and longing for that street, is not because I miss a younger version of myself. Thatās the place of my fatherās youth, of my motherās youth, of my friendās youth, itās the place that holds the youth of everything I love.
In that landscape, where we wonāt be able to gather like that again, I regret being unable to say my final farewell. To the things that are already gone, to the time that has already passed, I want to say a belated farewell. Goodbye, my youth.ā
and i just cry again
āIn the end, fate and timing do not happen, out of coincidence. They are products of earnest, simple choices, that make up miraculous moments. Being resolute, making decisions without hesitation⦠that is what makes timing. He wanted her more than I did. And I should have been more courageous. It was not the traffic lightās fault. It was not timing. It was my hesitations.ā āĀ Jung Hwan
- Reply 1988 (2015-2016)
one of my favorite things about asian movies (and asian media in general) is the care taken when thereās food. like you can tell love was put in those shots. itās not even fancy food a lot of the time, just normal people making food, because of the way the audience is assumed to understand that food, and making food, is an act of love, is a love language. how often food is used as a tool to convey a message, to symbolize something, rather than just part of the set, i think, is so satisfying especially because the actors themselves interact with it differently.
