Hello! I was wondering if you knew why Yuzu was alone during the Kiss & Cry at Beijing? I know Brian Orser & co. coach other skaters obv but still, I found it strange that nobody from the team was there and I can’t find out why anywhere. Thank youuuu

Yuzu was training remotely, away from his team at that time. I think he asked for the arrangement to be kept the same at the Olympics as well.

hi :) regarding last anon q i'm not entirely sure if this is correct (bc i haven't read the book myself and the parts that are translated don't say this either) but i read he might have received a scholarship of sorts from JOC? Hi! Been curious for a while, how did Yuzu manage to move and have his training in Canada in 2012? Was he sponsored already by ANA that time?

Hi~ If I don't recall wrongly, Yuzuru changed coaches to Brian Orser in 2012 but didn't move to Canada (he flew back and forth between Japan and Canada) until 2013. Yuzuru became an ANA employee in early 2013. I'm not sure exactly how much of his training is supported financially by ANA and other sponsorships/endorsements though.

Sir, can you tell how to land a quadruple axel!!

Step 1: Be Yuzuru Hanyu!

Unfortunately I don't know what Step 2 is because I am not Yuzuru Hanyu.

Jokes aside, you probably need 3 things:

(1) Excellent technique on the Axel jump,

(2) Ability to jump insane heights and/or distances OR rotate at an insane speed, so you can finish the 4.5 rotations before landing on the ice, and

(3) Excellent jump technique in general, as this is the most monstrous jump in figure skating to-date and you need all you can get to land it safely on one foot and one blade.

Yuzuru has (1) and (3) but hasn't quite reached the insane levels of height and distance / rotation speed he needs for (2). That said, his 4A attempt at Beijing 2022 should have been q not <. We feel that a ratified 4A is 80% complete for him at this point. Anyway congratulations to Yuzuru for landing a certified 4A, at the Olympics of all places.

Sometimes you can put a lot of effort into something but you get no or bad results. From such results, it may seem like you didn't put in effort. Thus - Efforts will lie.

However, you will definitely learn new things and get stronger and better from putting forth your best efforts. Even if the results are sometimes bad, the effort put in will never be for nothing. Efforts will never be in vain.

Yuzuru loves this quote and we can see why. Yuzuru's efforts are not always rewarded with high scores or medals, but you can see him getting better and better at figure skating because of all the blood, sweat and tears he puts into his craft. That is the true fruit of his hard work.

HelloI'd like to learn your opinion on Yuzuru's SP score in Beijing 2022. He couldn't do 4S because of a hole but there's 15-16 points gap between 95 and 111. So, I'm not so knowledgeable on the scoring system but if he could've jumped 4S; that means he would've gain 15 points or like that?! Or, he just got underscored?

The base value of the 4S is 9.70, and if landed well Yuzu could have gotten positive GOE on it (+1 to +5). That's about 10 to 15 points lost from a missing 4S. Practically speaking, misses affect PCS as well (although there is a whole new can of worms to be opened about whether this should be the case), so he probably lost about 1 to 2 points there too. So, to answer your question, yes, if he had landed the 4S well, Yuzu could have gained about 11 to 17 points more in the SP (SP score 106 to 112).

On a side note totally unrelated to your question, even though it has been nearly 3 years since our last post, we are glad that we still get asks on Yuzu. From the inactivity on this blog, it may be fairly assumed that we have lost interest, but this is totally not the case! We have been into Yuzuru Hanyu for 8 years now and are still going strong. Unfortunately, we had to stop activity on this blog. Firstly, we lost Photoshop which was our main mode of making edits, which is obviously the main point of this blog. Secondly, we had too many work commitments over these past 3 years. Thirdly, we lost a lot of interest in figure skating sans Yuzuru. We were so happy to get this ask which was the perfect opportunity to shout to the rooftops that our love for Yuzuru still burns bright despite us not being able to be "Yuzuru Hanyu Edits" anymore. (We'll still answer asks like this one though!)

And we know you didn't ask, but if you want to know our feelings on Yuzuru in Beijing 2022 in general, here is a summary: He skated beautifully besides the 4S in the short and free and we are so proud of him. 4A should have been q instead of <. The result doesn't matter, it feels organic that all Yuzuru's Olympic medals are gold and gold only. We can't wait for his gala performance but we hope he also takes time to rest and recover. F*ck the ISU and Yuzuru Hanyu is the greatest figure skater of all time.

EDIT: @its-sports-anime-life Yuzu sustained an ankle injury during practice. He made it through the Free Skate, but now he has to rest for 3 weeks. Depending on his condition he might not take part in GPF or Japan Nationals, although he has said he will work hard for GPF. 😔 We hope that he will rest and not take part, but we will also support his wishes and decisions, whatever they are. 🙏
