Solo
Some nights
it’s just you
and the record player.
Some nights the black disc spins
silently, as your head rests
against the desk.
Some nights you turn it over
constantly, staring into the dark
your lamp shields you from.
Some nights
you cry
to hear the loneliness
of violin solos.

Saturday
Sleepy kisses and half smiles Croaky voices and messy hair The light brightens the room but we soften it with a hazy glow Dark enough to doze but light enough to know it’s still morning
A slow shuffle to find deeper comfort In the crook of your neck or breathing softly into your chest We’ll have to wake soon but the stillness is beautiful
Gazing up at your slightly parted lips and flickering eyelids You are so gorgeous yet so unaware of it I always silently think it but the rawness of the morning seems to cast shadows on your face that enchant me even further
There’s an intimacy about mornings The night can hide moments that dance about in the dark But the morning is made for exposure
Your hand reaches out slightly and I fit my fingers perfectly into the spaces in-between Gentle groans but for different reasons We’ll watch the seasons from our window and I’ll remember every detail And then after quiet and monotonous conversations it’s time to face the day
As I stand in the kitchen preparing breakfast You remind me of what we had barely an hour before The same warmth and sleepy love That I know I’ll be craving tomorrow
Mornings were made for moments like these

your breath is my lullaby
i’ve never been an easy sleeper
i toss i turn i walk i talk
even at night my mind can’t sit still
and for years i’ve worried that no one would ever want to sleep next to me because i’m restless
i’ve been terrified that i would spend the rest of my life sleeping alone
but you sleep like a mountain unmoved by my midnight earthquakes
i don’t fidget as much when i’m sleeping beside you because i don’t have to try to get comfortable in your arms i just fit
and heaven knows we don’t get much sleep when we’re together but i swear i’ve never slept so well in my life

I’m the one that’s got to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life the way I want to.

What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again.
