“Mhm?” She hadn't been paying attention, too focused on the over-priced drink she bought at this cafe, idly stirring instead of drinking it. “I'm not sure what you need exactly. But I know that they keep some stuff at the counter, asking them instead of me is probably a better use of time, don't you think?”

Those words never came out of my mouth!” an exaggerated, heaving sigh left Simone as she rolled her eyes listening to the woman berate her about her comment just moments prior. Ignoring the woman as she was in mid-sentence, Simone turned swiftly on her heels to the person standing in line behind her. “Hey man–have you been listening to this shit? Didn’t I say that was an interesting way to color her hair? Did I ever say her hair looked bad?”

Generally—as well as Valencia knew New York—the line at any pizza place wasn’t the best place to comment on anything, even if you were muttering to yourself. But, then again, she found it hard to mind her own business while the women three steps in front of her was talking. Groaning, more like, about how much she’d paid for her dye job, about how apparently disrespectful it was for the other lady to say that. Valencia agreed with her, it wasn’t the best by any means and she wasn’t surprised when Simone turned to her. As long as she didn’t start anything, she was fine. “No, actually, you didn’t. It’s not the... most interesting I’ve seen, by any means. Besides, you’re just a stranger, anyway—I don’t see why it matters so much.”

Innocent, Peter could see. But he wasn’t arrogant, was he? He cared what people thought of him, he listened to criticism. Arrogant people didn’t do that. He couldn’t help but frown a little, but he was amused by her reasoning. “Y’know what,” he said, “I’ll take that. I’m Peter, by the way. Great to meet you.”

“You don’t think you’re arrogant? I hate to say it, but that’s typical of college kids,” she shrugged, placing the cigarette between her lips. He could humor whatever idea he wanted, and it was better to be honest—whether or not he believed it. “Anyways, let’s move on from that. I wouldn’t want to hear it, either. Right on. I’m Val, Valencia.”

As Najla pushed open the door and headed out of the Argent Museum, she couldn’t help but frown as she noticed the weather, ever so humid and rainy. She far preferred fall in the city, with its cozy and brisk days and cool nights. Fanning herself with a museum map, she desperately wished that she had brought an umbrella along with her.

As she started to head down the block, the rain dampening her hair, she collided with another person, falling to the pavement and bruising her knee. Wincing, she rubbed at her sore knee before pulling herself to her feet. “My apologies. The rain is messing me up. Are you okay there?”

The downside to there being less classes at the Russet during summer was—of course—the boredom Valencia had to deal with. Even with a semi-steady income, she couldn’t justify going out of her way to entertain herself, at least not in the ways people suggested. ( Netflix was a waste of money; Valencia would rather spend her days bored than trying to entertain herself with Vincent’s video games; and she’d filled her art museum quota. People always seemed to be telling her to visit the Argent, with an added “it’s free.” )

She would stay in front of her window unit AC for whole days to escape the humidity, if she didn’t have anything better to do. But, there wasn’t anything edible in her fridge and there was a 7-Eleven a few blocks away from her apartment building. The rain started while Valencia was filling up a Slurpee cup, and that and a plastic bag were slowing her down. Also slowing her down was another person, one she wasn’t necessarily paying attention to. “Mhm, that apple was probably just as bruised when I bought it.” Thankfully, nothing fell and Valencia’s urge to be nasty wasn’t any worse than usual. “Might want to watch where you’re going, next time.”

Unsure as to exactly what constituted a “man’s habit”, he just nodded, rather than asking for clarification. Besides, he might be wrong, but she’d sounded kind of - bitter wasn’t the right word, but - no, bitter was the right word. Peter started walking in the direction she had indicated for the shop, ensuring that she walked with him. “September,” he said with a smirk. “How’d you know?”

She made a show of locking her lips, if only to shut herself up. He didn’t want to hear of the pseudo politics that had been filling Valencia’s head since she was old enough to understand them—and that could be said for almost everyone else, even if it was something she complained about more than she thought. “You’ve got that look—a little innocent, a little arrogant. You know,” she shrugged, not letting on the fact that she’d had some of his work in her apartment, curious to see if he remembered her.

Theodora was in Portrait Perfect, like always, but she was doing something that she didn’t always do, in fact that she hardly ever did- sit in a waiting room chair. Not that Theodora was the biggest stickler to appointment times. She often showed up without an appointment at all, much to the employees’ chagrin. She spent a lot of money at Portrait Perfect, and the beauticians all had a liking for her, and these two facts alone allowed Theodora a lot of leeway at the salon. This time, however, she showed up over a half an hour early for her appointment, and all the chairs were full. None of the hairstylists would budge- Theodora would have to wait.

She crossed a leg and huffed, forcefully flicking a page of Cosmopolitan. It was clear to the other people in the circle of chairs that Theodora was annoyed. If any of her acquaintances were among them (she hadn’t looked), they would know this was only typical for her.

All of New York seemed to be themed. Times Square was like something easily found in a disaster movie, in anything where the main premise was a disaster. It was all a gimmick—easily marketable to natives and imports alike and people fell for it. All the fucking time. Call her a cynic, but it was easier to believe than these people thinking they were creative. The same could be said for the owner of Portrait Perfect but Valencia couldn’t pass up any of the deals on their outside board. Still, the sign that said Walk-ins Welcome! happened to be the most honest thing about the salon as she walked into it. First thing, her nose wrinkled at the smell of the salon and the prints hanging above the receptionist’s desk.

Valencia was waved off to one of the chairs in the waiting room, bored out of her mind. Maybe getting her eyebrows done wasn’t worth it. It would be better than wandering around the city, though, and the person seated across from her was entertaining enough for now. She looked at her the same way people looked at TVs in salons, idly as not to seemed so engrossed in something so trivial. Valencia wasn’t a people watcher, didn’t openly gape at people and she wasn’t very good at it. After a while, it was monotonous more than anything else. She sat on the edge of one of the tables, flipping through the magazine covers.

“Excuse me?” she said it loud enough to be noticed, tapped a broken fingernail against the other’s chair. “Can you tell me how long you’ve been waiting? I need to figure whether it’s worth staying here or not.”

Peter nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I tell myself I’m not a smoker, and yet the numbers say otherwise.” He probably got through a packet every fortnight or so. “Sure, I’ve got time to kill. You do the talking.”

“They do say it’s a man’s habit, so you’re already doing miles better than I am.” Valencia tried her best to keep her voice unaffected—but she couldn’t tell if it worked, if there was a tiny note of bitterness that slipped into it. There probably was, and it didn’t matter as long as he didn’t notice it. “You’re a student, right? When’s your next class?”

She nodded, smiled at the offer and grabbed one of the rattier cigarettes from the box, “Thanks. People should stop saying it’s so easy to go cold turkey—I do this more than I’d like to admit, but there’s worse habits. Definitely, as long as you don’t mind.”

Peter was a patchy smoker, one here and there and the occasional whole packet when he was stressed. He wasn’t displeased to have been recognised, but a little bit surprised. “Oh, I don’t need to smoke that much,” he said, with a small shake of the head.

“You sure?” Valencia wasn’t so much coaxing him as much as asking for one for herself—she’d gone a few weeks without a cigarette of her own, and she wasn’t picky beyond that. The perks to bumming smokes ended with it being cost effective, if you were to ask her. “Would you not mind going, anyway?”
