one thing i always disliked about how hotd portrays the dragons is how -- weightless they feel. like we see dragons fly close to the ocean's surface many times, and nothing. not a single wave created by the flap of their wings, not even a ripple. and if it's the smaller ones, like arrax or moondancer or fuck it, stormcloud, i get it. BUT FUCKING VHAGAR? (gif credit goes to @/z0rres)

vhagar is the largest living dragon, close to balerion in size, her, and the other large dragons like vermithor, silverwing etc. ought to create tempest like waves flying that close to the ocean. i will not take criticism.

she grows tired more easily these days, her wings feel heaver; and still the old queen aches to fly, the younglings swarming around her like fish -- clenches something harsh but sweet in her chest. laena, too, a precious balm for her aching heart. she was beautiful once, not like the brilliant meraxes; scales of silver and horns of gold, she was green like a summer forest once. now her black is bleached by the sun and most horns adorning her head had long since snapped off. she inspired terror once, STILL DOES, not quite like balerion used to. stuck between meraxes and balerion, she always had been, and despised them for it, now she misses them dearly. vhagar is alone, NOW, no more. ❝ i thank you for your sweet love. ❞ thunderous voice carrying such saccharine words, and the old she-beast rests her head near the lady of driftmark. some things remain unsaid, though. she loved dear laena, of course she did, but that changed little of her nature. a war dragon, vhagar was, a battle dragon. the calmth and care laena gives does the she-beast good -- but still she wants to go battle slain; SHE'D HATE TO DIE LIKE OLD BALERION. too weak to lift his body off the ground.

he is coiled around a pit of fire of his own making, WARM AND COMFORTABLE -- horned head resting ontop elongated wings. a lonely heart and proud ego were ill companions; was there another, someone to coil with -- and around. syrax is the closest to steady and constant the blood wyrm had; and she too, as the nature of their rider's relationship, drifts close and apart. caraxes uncurls as her sweet scent approaches, he sings and chirps upwards, his haunting screech a poor caricature of a roar. ❝ syrax -- sweet syrax -- golden dew and brilliant hide. ❞

SYNDOR, THE SILVER SHADOW is a ferocious and ill tempered dragon, the child of silverwing and vermithor. during his birth the dragonshepards whispered of balerion rising again, for the young dragon was back as the deepest night, safe for only his horns of silver.

though syndor loved his mother, he greatly disliked the dragonshepards, the black beast ended up leaving the dragoncaverns to live outside. not quite a wild dragon, not quite under the targaryen banner.

in the year 122AC syndor beant his neck to aurane targayen (@/absolventiia).

the young beast may not have been battle hardened, but he was a war dragon at heart, flying against the red queen herself in rook's rest, flying before sunfyre and even vhagar. syndor loved to fight and fly, rising up even against the blood wyrm, caraxes and the winged mountain, nagini above the god's eye. (survival au available.)

many sightings believing to be the fearsome cannibal were actually syndor.

DRAXTAR, THE BLACK SUN is a mild mannered dragon, the second son of balerion the black dread, younger brother to silverwing, the last egg of meraxes that hatched, hatching 39AC. he is black as the night, but has the golden horns and markings of his mother. draxter is often described as a noble beast, refusing certain types of meat, growing ill tempered when the shepards did not let him out of the dragonpit to fly for a few hours a day and suffering only few humans, even targaryens, near him.

draxtar is the bonded and bound mate to dreamfyre, despite him being much younger than her, he is larger than her, in fact, the black sun rivals vermithor in size. they are so similar that it is impossible to accurately tell who of them is larger, though the title is given to the bronze fury for his fierce nature.

draxtar is the father of shyrkos, morghul, tessarion and tyraxes.

he was among the chained dragons when the shepard and his mob attacked them, slew many of the attackers together with dreamfyre -- and ultimately died when his mate crashed into the dome. he was the only dragon that managed to claw his way out of the rubble, his body broken and mangled, roaring one last time before dying. ( survival au available. )

VYLERA, THE GREY LADY is a gentle spirited she-dragon, the cradled egg of lady rhaella targaryen ( @/alyafae ). she hatched in the year 79AC, a child of vermithor and silverwing, though vylera greatly favored her mother appearance and personality wise. the young she-beast bonded to rhaella quickly and being allowed more free range than young dragons normally were at the time, she grew fast. vylera is kind to humans or dragons, but she is quick to take offense and grow ill tempered.

during the dance of dragons vylera and her rider joined under rhaenyra targaryen's banner -- she had grown large by then, just shy of meleys, though she was formidable and fast, the she-dragon kept her kind hearted nature and was thus, not well suited for war. vylera disliked burning soldiers below, and she never wished to strike at another dragon first. despite her being ill suited, vyleria was one of the few dragons to survive the dance.

the ripple effect meraxes not dying during the conquest would have. her and balerion were bound and mated, and unlike vhagar, who was a battle dragon through and through, meraxes was a mother at heart. she would have given balerion so many eggs -- and from those so many would've hatched.

one day i will make an actual edit of melaryon, the blood snake -- offspring of caraxes, the blood wyrm and dreamfyre, the sapphire queen. but for now all you need to know is that she looks like caraxes but with a slightly more reasonable neck and body length.

since i already added silverwing and vermithor, and i will add vhagar, in time as well -- OLD DRAGON CANON DIVERGENCE.

a dragon's skin does not sag, with age their skin hardens, by vermithor's / silverwing's / vhagar's age their skin is harder than stone. how to tell a dragon is aged: -their horns, the only part of their body that does not grow back, may be snapped off, especially if said dragon is not tended to by the shepards. especially a war dragon like vhagar will have little to no horns left on their head. giving them a bald appearance. -the scales on their back, having been bleached by constant exposure to the sun, may appear lighter in than the scales on their belly and chest.

#yknow i headcanon that vhagar used to be beautiful. not brilliant gold and silver like meraxes was ofc. she was always a beast of war.#but vhagar used to be green like summer grass. she used to have a crown of horns adorning her head.#now her back has been bleached and her crown his missing. and she has scars all over her body where scales grew back imporperly.#general meta tbt.

drogon in the books: black as the deepest night, eyes and claws blood red. drogon in the show: a dirty black.

rhaegal in the books: jade green with horns, claws and a spine of beaten bronce. his eyes glint like molten gold. rhaegal in the show: a grubby green.

viserion in the books: a body of gentle cream, yet a spine, belly, claws and horns appearing as if made of solid gold. viserion in the books: a muddy brown/grey.
