Jok Church in SF Chronicle
Jok Church, creator of U Can with Beakman and Jax and Beakman's World, had his obituary published in the SF Chronicle this week. Jok was not only a wonderful, loving man but a super interesting and accomplished guy as well.

Jok Church
I learned this morning that my beloved and dear friend Jok Church died on Friday of a heart attack in his home city of San Francisco. Jok was the creator of Beakman, the scientist from Jok's syndicated comic, U Can with Beakman and Jax, which was later made into the TV show Beakman's World. As the show’s title character, I got to know Jok well as we worked together over the years. He was a kind, loving, supportive, generous, salty! sweet! great buddy and pal. Jok, millions of people all over the world - especially in Latin America - loved what you created, and you changed so many of their lives, including mine. I love you, Jok.
Target advice
In the “Better for You” aisle....YAY! I THOUGHT SO!
Story on NPR this Saturday
Saturday morning, September 26th, on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition: Jon Kalish’s story about the surprising popularity across Latin America of the 90s science TV show Beakman’s World. I’ll post a link once the show has aired.
Hanging with the brilliant genius Brazilian mamulengo puppeteer Chico Simoes at the Nat'l Puppetry Fest last month at UConn. His show was funny as hell, beautifully manipulated, and performed by a true master. One of the best hand puppet shows I've ever seen!
My bad
John McCain’s recent report on government waste, AMERICA’S MOST WANTED, says: “Sandglass plans to use a portion of this [NEA] grant to partially fund a 10-day international “Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival,” which will showcase “puppetry and unusual theater.” One of the many “adult” themed puppet shows on the festival calendar is Paul Zaloom’s “White Like Me: A Honky Dory Puppet Show.” According to the Sandglass Center, the show will “tackl[e] the gnarly subject of the upcoming de-honky-ization of the United States when white people in America will be…‘just another other.’”
I’m pretty much in awe of the enthusiasm of folks in Latin America for Beakman. That’s awe-face on me right there...
Behind me: Filip Auchere, one of the two amazing puppeteers (Emma Utgès is the other).
