Either we’re both gonna be miserable, or we can actually find a way to make this fun. But I’m not suffering so you can get an easy out.”

Squinting, Zack attempted to not come across so harsh about the fact he definitely, absolutely, 100% did not want to take part in anything that would consist of any physical exertion. “Miserable sounds easy. Fun sounds... like effort.”

Odette rolled her eyes as she glanced over the male who clearly had no interest in participating in any of their activities, not paying attention to what the instructor was trying to tell her. “Says the sloth who has spent the entire activity sitting on the ground.” She snapped, throwing the bow to her feet and putting up her hands. “Alright Mr. Judgy, if you’re so great and too cool to actually participate in something then why don’t you show us all how fantastic you are at everything.” She said coldly, motioning to the large group around them and ignoring the instructors pleas about people being before him and working together as a group. “I mean lets see if you can talk the talk.”

“Sloth? Okay, fuck you, I’m immunally disabled,” Not a word, or a term, but Zack knew both of these things as he brushed the girl off indignantly and didn’t care to think up anything better. All he had to do was wave the chronic illness card and pretty much anyone would leave him alone, it was his best shot at making it through this fucking hell hole of a camp. “So what, you flunk a few years? Not learn how to use your ear holes? I’m not here to participate. I’m just saying, I see what you’re doing and it’s dumb as hell.”

“You ask for some cable and look at me like I’m the freak,” Thomas remarked as he rubbed a hand under his nose and started taping up the other end of the blankets to that other tree. He was a freak though, and that was fine. “What do you need cable for then?” It really wouldn’t matter, though. He didn’t have cable in his dufflebag anyway, but he did have more duct tape. Several rolls of duct tape. Far as he was concerned, that way way more useful than any old cable. “If anyone brought McD’s out here, it’d be bad by now and their fries give me the shits anyway,” he stated matter-of-factly, having a more difficult time getting the duct tape all the way around since the blankets were now in the way. “Dude, help me out - need you to pass this around the tree to me until the roll is gone. Thomas stood on the other side of the tree, holding out the roll of duct tape towards Zack while his other hand appeared at the side, waiting to grab it again and keep the roundabout going.

“Internet, dweeb.” He explained with a slight raise of his shoulders, hands still remaining in his pockets, not making a move to advance nor fall back. Maybe he hadn’t been clear enough; maybe he was speaking another language. Who knew, Thomas was a hard guy to read. Watching as he went on about the expiry date of McDonald's takeout though — which for the record, Zack was willing to argue didn’t exist — he only turned his gaze skyward. “Pretty sure you could nuke a McBurger and the fucker would still be the same mangled thing it was delivered as. That shit’ll keep my body from decomposing into thirty-fifty and to be fucking honest, I’m here for it,” He, of course, neglected to touch the dietary topic of his type one diabetes in that moment. Watching then as Thomas beckoned him, Zack made a satirical expression in return. “Oh yeah? You need me? Thought you were ready to fight me for squatters rights,” He antagonized for the fun of it. “How much of this weirdo contraption becomes mine, once I put in the hard labor?”

“So… you’re telling me that all I have to do is look through a pair of binoculars and check off what kind of bird I think I see?” Mason picked up their backpack and tossed it over their shoulder. It seemed like the easiest activity on the list, and the last thing that they wanted was to spend all day in the sun over-exerting themselves. “Alright. Let’s get to it. Lead the way.”

"Yeah, easy peasy, it’s no rocket science...” Zack sighed, a little short with the fact that they felt the need to repeat the activity back to him. It wasn’t their fault, of course, the outside world just tended to make Zack a worse version of himself. “Uh — yeah... no. This one’s on you, party leader. I’m just here for the alibi. You look like you’re doing what we’re meant to be doing... and I’ll back it up if anyone asks. That’s about as far as my team effort skills go.”

“I FOUND IT!” The bellow came from Thomas Scheffer as he threw a fist into the air in triumphance, reminiscent of John Bender himself in The Breakfast Club. “The perfect spot,” he murmured more to himself now, light blue eyes wide and eagerly going back and forth between the two trees just far enough apart to be useful. He dropped his duffle and began to rummage, pulling out several bed sheets within seconds and then a roll of duct tape. Ripping up the end of the tape, he grabbed the end of the sheets, walked to one tree, and then suddenly began to jog around it, causing the tape to unroll and tape that blanket against the bark. “Better make sure it’s secure,” Thomas continued speaking to himself, going round and round and round until nearly the entire roll of duct tape had been used and it looked like a small chunk of the tree was made of just that material. Discarding the useless cardboard leftover from the tape, he grabbed another roll (oh yes, he’s come prepared with several thank you very much), and took up the other end of the blankets. As he made his way towards the other tree, the sound of walking perked his ears just after he ripped up the new roll. “Hey no way- I already staked claim on these trees and I’m prepared to fight for it,” Thomas shouted out, head twisting in their direction. “I’ve got duct tape and a huge fucking forest behind me.”

Catching a glimpse of the last of the sheets getting roped from the bag, Zack’s eyebrows shot up into his hairline, and even higher when his roomie for the week pulled out the tape. Oh good. He was sleeping a bunk away from a kinky nicknack freak who had an arsenal of weird shit he didn’t need out here in the wilderness. Lowering his cell for a moment, Zack hesitated moving the hell along and minding his own business. He almost got away with it too, but clearly his presence was known as Thomas swung around and made his claims.

“Well, fuck me, dude, I’m shaking,” Zack stated in his usual unenthused way. Although with skin seeming harder than any Treant, he actually kind of liked Thomas. Well... no, he tolereated him. More than some of the other idiots in the cabin. The kid was weird, kind of cookey. An entertainment to say the least. “You got any cable in your Mary Poppins bag? McDonalds? God, I could go for like a fucking quarter pounder right now, this place is the pits.”

Pulling back the string on the bow with ease as Odette straightened up her posture. None of the activities had really appealed to her but the idea of accidentally shooting someone she disliked during archery appealed enough for her to stop sulking around her cabin and actually get involved. Glancing over at the instructor before smirking to herself and aiming the arrow at a nearby tree instead of the bright target. “Oh watch out!” She called out in a fake worried tone as she shot the arrow towards the tree, watching with satisfaction as it hit the tree. “Guess I’m worst at this then I anticipated.” She giggled, pretending to look embarrassed by the whole situation when her mark had been hit perfectly.

Glancing up for only a second to catch the sight of the arrow embedding itself in the tree, Zack made a face. It wasn’t one of amusement, but it wasn’t entirely that he was unimpressed either. In fact, it was probably the most exciting thing to happen in the last twenty minutes he’d been sitting there, duefully allowing people to jump the line because he had no intentions of actually participating. He’d downloaded enough off of Netflix to last him the week, he was set. No bullshit outdoor activities for him.

Listening to her retort to the instructor, Zack scoffed under his breath. “Your damsel shindig’s a little transparent, you know? Besides, you’re not supposed to flaunt what you’re shit at, that’s like rule numero uno out here.”
