A wicked grin split across my face and the gates of Hell opened up behind me, releasing a gust of hot wind that whipped my apron around my body and forced the woman to shield her face. Demons came forth, dancing around in flames with songs of, “She wants to speak to a manager. Did you hear that? She wants to speak to a manager!” before erupting into earsplitting shrieks of laughter, none louder than my own cackling.

I took in the woman’s look of utter horror before my eyes rolled back into my head and I growled,

“I am the manager.”

i used to watch one piece but literally had to stop because i couldn’t stand seeing the artstyle or the misogyny anymore.  also i feel it’s important to point out that the above excerpt abt funimation is such a massive understatement and (imo) takes away from the transmisogyny by focusing on the wrong part.  one of the few things i remember abt the series vividly is okama island and its inhabitants and it’s so much worse.

okama island is introduced when the crew splits up to train on their own for a couple years.  sanji (a guy whose most prominent character trait is massive nosebleeds whenever he looks at women to the point where there are a couple episodes where he almost dies from too many nosebleeds) is sent to okama island to train.  his introduction to the island is him seeing women, getting infatuated with them and following them around with heart eyes, and then finding out they’re trans and being absolutely horrified and disgusted.  the whole thing is played off as a joke where the punchline is sanji being “tricked” into being attracted to trans women.  this compounded with a lot of them being incredibly offensive transmisogynistic caricatures that almost every other character is incredibly uncomfortable and/or disgusted by makes things so much worse.

ive seen a couple people bring up pictures of okama as an argument that one piece actually does have good representation of women and i want everyone to know from the bottom of my heart that this isn’t true.  even thinking about the okama makes me feel sick and trans women deserve infinitely better.  and people who act complacent like this is ok or “just how things are so who cares” need to do some serious reevaluating and read up on harmful stereotypes, caricatures, and their impact on trans women.
