She doesn’t drink often, but sometimes it’s nice to curl up with a cup of eggnog in front of their fireplace - a fireplace that doesn’t work, at least not yet. Part of the downsides of moving into an old cabin, but with all the work they’ve been putting in, it already feels like home. Half the rooms have new paint, warm white instead of a grisly gray. The roof’s stopped leaking after Zarya went in with caulk and new gutters, and the doorbell now rings instead of going clang, clang, clang.
It’s her fourth– fifth? glass and she’s feeling the alcohol-related warmth in her fingertips and toes. Baobei sleeps on his new dogbed, trademark husky patterns a comfortable sight against the white fabric. She giggles as he starts snoring.
“Baobei, you snore. Just like Zarya.”
Her girlfriend, no, her fiancée, snorts. “I keep telling you, I do not snore.”
“You do too,” Mei says as she wiggles deeper into Zarya’s side, blanket pulled halfway up their torsos as Zarya watches the holoscreen.
The tall woman has her arm around Mei’s shoulders. She squeezes gently. “At least I don’t hog the covers,” she says, her voice dropping to an octave that Mei faintly registers as her “tipsy” voice. The same amount of beers have a lesser effect on her big fiancée.
“Fix the fireplace and maybe I’ll share.”
“I will, soon. We require another trip to the store for that.”
“I love you, 亲” the nickname slips out before she can catch it.
“亲 ?” Zarya asks, lips already on her forehead. “What does that mean?”
“Uhh…” Mei squirms out of Zarya’s hold, but she’s just too weak compared to Zarya’s biceps.
“Uhh…? My little любимая, you can call me anything.” Zarya’s used that nickname before - beautiful? Mei can’t quite remember, but she’s still mortified. Nicknames always feel so…strong. Even if her love is strong enough to merit them.
She relents when Zarya starts pressing more kisses to her face, cheek, and exposed shoulder. “It means something like…don’t laugh, but it means “babe,” I guess?”
“My little 亲, I love it. And I love you.”
She shoves a pillow at her fiancée‘s face.
