marius is so “oh no! anyway” about eponine confessing her love and then immediately dying that 1862 girlies could have started using “and by the way, monsieur marius, i believe that i was a little bit in love with you” as a preface to announce major geopolitical events

only 62 more frogs until we hit 8,000 species described. the moment we've all been waiting for
there are an average of about 150 new amphibian species described per year so I remain hopeful that 2026 will be the year of 8,000 frogs
I do love that somebody tagged tumblr's own frog scientist on this post. chop chop dr scherz, we've got 62 more frogs to discover and you're the only frog scientist any of us knows
GUYS amphibian species of the world is still at 7,994 species of frog BUT amphibiaweb is at 8,008 species of frog, and do you know who is a co-author on the 8,000th species of frog there???? TUMBLR'S OWN FROG SCIENTIST DR SCHERZ
yall we did it
we made it to boob frogs
At some point on the journey back to Erid, Rocky gets around to asking Grace exactly why he was so mesmerised by seeing the astrophage in the Petrova line.
Grace describes it as best he can, but all he can really manage to get across to Rocky is that he was surrounded by small floating lights.
Later on, Grace is talking about the stars and how important they've been to human cultures for millennia. “What do the stars look like, question?” Rocky wants to know.
Oh, y'know, they're a bunch of small floating lights.
There's a disco ball on the Hail Mary. Grace says it's there because it “makes me happy”. “How does it make Grace happy, question?” Rocky wants to know.
Oh, it creates the illusion that he's surrounded by small floating lights.
Rocky begins to do some research.
Glitter: a substance invented by humans to make things look like they're covered in small lights.
Human jewellery: mostly involves gemstones or polished metals, designed to reflect small lights.
Christmas lights. Candles. Lanterns. Fireworks. Glowsticks. Glow in the dark paint. Rocky is beginning to notice a pattern here, statement.
It takes Grace a fucking while after getting to Erid to notice that a lot of the gifts he's receiving from grateful Eridians are either a) sparkly, b) incredibly shiny, or c) fitted with lights.
While the last one is obviously a concession for his human light sense, he's confused about the former two. Are Eridian materials usually this shiny? Is there some quality about sparkly or highly polished surfaces that makes them sound better? Or is there something about Eridian geology/metallurgy that makes their materials like this?
He asks Rocky about it.
“Simple. I tell people humans like lots of small lights. Humans are easy to make happy.”
Grace kind of wants to protest that humans are much more complicated than that.
But honestly… it fucking works. Like yeah the polished gemstones, shiny metals and glittery rocks are beautiful. Yes those Christmas lights you put up around the house did markedly improve my mental health, Rocky. Thank you, I hate it.
Grace spends a lot of time trying not to think about whether his species' urge to explore the cosmos (that saved their planet and nearly killed him several times) is tied to the same instinct that made his students like glitter gel pens.

Is it just me or are Hamlet and Victor Frankenstein kind of similar? This could be just because I read Frankenstein right after I finished Hamlet but I think there is a case to be made. They both struggle with coming to terms with one of their parents' death (and mortality in general) and cope with it in unhealthy ways. They both are either too passive or too impulsive. They both possess substantial self-hatred while still being arrogant and self-centred, ignoring people around them and hurting them in the process. They both close themselves off and become consumed by despair and later hatred. They both straddle the line between sanity and madness. They both fail to accept the consequences of their actions. Both of their stories end with them dying and the focus shifting to their parallel who, however, doesn't repeat their mistakes.

Well... Just der Tod (Elisabeth das Musical) kissing R but they look like Enjolras
Do you think that what kept Elizabeth going were Justine's last words: “Live, and be happy, and make others so?” So that even after William's horrible murder, Justine's heinous execution, after being desilusioned about the goodness of the world, no longer certain in justice or truth, even when humanity started to seem monstrous to her and when she felt as if thousands were against her, pushing her towards an abyss, she still felt hope rebembering the kind soul who, even faced with her own death, comforted those around her and who bid her to live? And thus, despite feeling utter misery and despite (and maybe even a little bit because of) the guilt she felt for not being able to reverse Justine's fate, she forced a smile on her face (since she must be happy) and devoted herself entirely to others (since she must make others so)? And wasn't that, after all, the same as what she had always been doing, ever since Mrs. Frankenstein's death? How Justine reminded her of her late aunt, in her mannerisms, in her speech. Did those words of hope and joy become heavy as she strove to fullfill them? Did she think of them as of a sacred promise? An unbreakable obligation she must keep even if it breaks her? But without Justine, there wasn't anyone to notice and see what lies beneath that self-sacrificing happiness.
