So here’s another thing that bugs me about “aging up is bad!” argument. Using Atreus/Loki from god of war as an example, if another game comes out where he’s an adult and people who played the other games where he was a kid now pair him, write nsfw, or pair an oc with him are they still bad because we “grew up with him” or is his new canon age acceptable?

I get trying to stop and protect kids, and some things need to be addressed but damn am I tired of people trying to turn weird basic shit in fiction ( kinks, aging up characters, shipping in general tbh) is turned into a serious issue while ignoring actual instances is fucking annoying to say the least.

And yes I get it you don’t want to talk about serious issues, and only fandom stuff. But that energy also applies to ships.

Also i am wondering,,,, how do they read fanfics in any fandoms ? What do they read ? Like aged up characters has so many au's, university au's oh what type of major would they choose ?, wht kind of drunk would they be ? Roomate dramas, what kind of part time are they stuck with, how do they pay their rent ? Are they homeless, broke, with shitty hairstyle? What kind of dates would they have or who will they marry ? what cars would they love to drive. Would they have piercings? Tattoos? Or fantasy au's, vampire au's, murder mystery police au, office au romance drama, hospital au, esp in aot, mha, csm, jjk fanfics ? If they are so against aging up characters, do they just usually stop growing up in fanfics after 18 or stay frozen 😭? I think ts is the cornerstone of so many fandoms. Also mind you in Germany, teenagers do weed, drink and shit at 14. I feel like the infantilisation/woobification/sterialisation of fictional characters has made people treat them as if these are innocent pure actual irl people who cant be "dirtied" and must not grow up because it ruins your personal perception of them or something. They have "adopted" them it seems... Parasocial type shi if you get my drift :/ like in jjk for eg- were these people up in arms when Yuji put up that poster on the wall in his room in jjk manga/anime ? I feel like they would have been scandalised. I used to have my aesthetics ready of stuff i would do when i turn 18+, fantasizing about so many things i wanted to do. Thats what the aging up characters is lmao, your imagination.

So we all know the trope where the Darling runs away while pregnant with the Yandere's child. Darling ends up giving birth and raising the child until the Yandere finds them once more. Reclaiming "his perfect" family.

BUT (hear me out)

What if it's not the Darling who ends up having the baby? What if after the Darling escapes and starts living a "normal life," just trying to recuperate from the trauma.

Meanwhile, the Yandere uses the Darling's DNA/Blood mixed with their own to create a child. I don't really know the medical/magic specifics. But years later, Darling ends up running into a child that looks SO UNCOMFORTABLY LIKE THEM, but with one feature making it obvious they are the Yandere's child as well.

This child haunts them. Because they've clearly been raised by a deranged, obsessive psycho. Who will very likely use this child as an excuse to reclaim their Darling. But they are technically still the Darling's child. Someone the Darling wants to get to know and raise and watch them grow.

Will the Darling go back to the yandere just for the child?

Will the Darling try to steal their child?

EX: A Gojo fic should be with the Gojo Tags, not the Nanami Kento tags. A Toji fic should be with the Toji tags attached, not the Geto tags! Etc, etc!

sometimes I think we should remember that we, as a fandom, have binge watched and rewatched and seen gifsets of the same scenes over and over such that we know every detail and have lines memorized. we've relived moments who knows how many times.

the characters, on the other hand, have lived every moment in the show exactly one. in real time. many of those moments were years and years ago. the details are gonna be fuzzy

Tbh one of the things that sucks the most about western fandom is the overwhelming tendency for people to either sanitize the character relationship and shave off anything potentially problematic to the point that they're #soulmates #healthiest_relationship on earth (and if they are aware they do this insist that doing so is a moral imperative to prove you aren't an icky person who romanticizes icky things), or to overinflate all of the potentially problematic elements in a relationship until it drowns all else out and defines the relationship as a whole

Like idk man maybe the character relationship is more complex than that, because it's impossible for any relationship to be perfecty unproblematic, because people even hurt each other in healthy relationships sometimes, and also because flanderizing relationships into being the most problematic thing ever or most purest unproblematic thing ever (regardless of which someone sees as better or worse) doesn't have any actual "this opinion makes you better as a person" weight to it

They're not real. There is nothing physical that we can actually do to them. They are just an acclimation of a Creator's thoughts/feelings, a vessel for a message or for pleasure.

If we put this same energy towards real victims, maybe that fiction these puritans clutch their pearls over would be less frequent to find.

For real I grew up evangelical and have since left it and its baffling how many people still cling to evangelical norms, even if they discard stuff like 'okayyy you can dress slutty but Thought Crime Bad'. I legit had a user on here who said it was 'gross' to age up minor characters, and I asked if that fictional character was actually being harmed. Even threw in if they'd be ok with that character staying a minor instead.

They blocked me immediately after.

It happens every time I ask. And this time it really bugged me because that same user defended me on other points I made, so I was actually being polite with them (if I wasn't I'd just block them instead of engage).

Like creators are allowed to age up their characters, it's not gross if the fans do it. But I've been seeing all this on tiktok as well, and it's largely minors spreading this puritan BS.

Oh be careful with the 'OCs can be aged up by the creators thing' though because I've had people get mad at me for writing one of my Pokemon trainer OC's backstory first and then shipping him with another character when he was older. He's nineteen and has a small age gap with my interpretation of N lmao its like the tamest shit.

I used to understand why it was an 'issue' to do any of this stuff. Until I learned that thought crimes are not real and purity culture is rampant in fandom spaces.

Every time I see someone complain about something they find oh so ‘weird’ for people to like in fiction or oh so ‘unsettling’ and making a post to shame people for it or for their own character interpretations etc. I’m filled with more and more spite to fuel my writing.

Maybe it's just me.

But I'd rather see people age up minor characters to a LEGAL (18+) age, than put a minor character through sexual/adult situations because in canon they are not an adult (or were once a minor for a good portion of it).

I understand there are cases of predators doing this to avoid accusations, but at least with this route they still make that character an ADULT in their sexualized fanfic/art. Even better if the character does become an adult at some point in the story - in this case they have NO excuse to not use that design/version over them being a minor.

Plus, a lot of people in fandom are kids. And they grow up. So a lot of them want the character to 'grow up' as well, even if it's just outside of the canon.

And obviously, when I say 'aged up' I mean they have to also LOOK and ACT like an adult. You can't just slap the numbers on them and change nothing else.

For context on why I made this post:

I had brought this up to a TikTok creator I've followed for a LONG time, they said 'anyone who ages up a character solely for sexual fanfic/art is a pedophile' with no context or nuances.

I was just trying to understand their point (asking genuinely why they think this way about fictional characters), but the entire time they were accusing me of pedophelia and said I 'needed my hard drives checked' and to 'shut up'.

I then asked them when did I ever say I agree with the actual pedophiles who use fictional media to lure in real victims, because them jumping to outright pedophelia (in the context that real people cannot time travel or just change their age like in fiction) in this context is a red flag for me (i.e. very reactionary and not willing to discuss the nuances of fandom over being 'righteous').

And then they immediately blocked me. I got no response from them after this, nor any responses from the many others that jumped in to label me as a pedophile and agree with this creator.

I know this seems like another 'Proshipper' type discourse, but here is the thing - people cannot time travel, or change their age like characters in fiction can. AGING UP a character to 18+ (along with making them look/act like an adult), or just using their canon adult version (if they have one), is still leagues better than keeping them as minors and using them in sexualized fanfic/art. I'd rather have the former than the latter, because they are still sexualizing an ADULT over a minor.

I just wish people didn't jump on my ass over trying to take this maturely and add proper nuances, I made my own post on my TikTok about this and I got 'righteous' kids/teens trying to 'cancel' me and saying I'm a pedophile because 'oh but the character in canon is/was a minor so it's gross'.

Again, this is FICTION. We cannot time travel or change our ages like fiction can, we need to stop trying to 'save' fictional characters and focus on the real people who are effected by the predators who use such media to lure in minors.

I know that in the past, I used to be this kind of person. The type to try and 'protect' fictional characters over real victims. But with me being a victim myself, I was projecting and now I see the real harm going on (i.e. using fictional media to lure in minors and exploit them or to excuse pedophelia because it was drawn and/or with a fictional character over the real thing happening).

I was hoping this creator would've understood...but no. I got dogpiled on, called a 'pedophile' for preferring aging up a character over keeping them a minor in sexualized fanfic/art. And after all that, I had to private my own post on the matter because so many came in accusing me of the same thing.

And no one even read the damn description I made either, I literally explained everything and the one time I told someone to read it they blocked me (I think I embarrassed them). Then I got someone using their alt accounts to harass me after I blocked them the first time.

In the future, I'll keep this stuff to Tumblr and off of TikTok.

so sorry to hear that, tiktok is a very reactionary anti place. they dont understand that things will not be curated to their interests or dislikes and instead play the role of a fandom policer regarding everything. they even encourage others to send hate messages, harass writers, artists, creators and so much more. they have lost the actual weight of words and its meanings.
