i also i know ive said this before but i often think about when i was like 13/14 and i learned what neopronouns were for the first time and made a tumblr post that was like “omg what if zee captain used zee neopronouns” and then a few months later i checked the romac website only to see that all of zeer pronouns had been changed. hashtag the impact of a teenager on tumblr dot com
i have something of a theory that some of the characterization choices made in the rewrite were an attempt at fixing the “it’s funny because [insert marginalized group here]” present in the original. i really genuinely think the reason captain was nonbinary / the reason captain was so silly / the reason pilot was pilot is because vitaly wanted to use a gender nonconforming man (which captain was, initially, before pronouns were changed a few years in) and ~crazy people~ etc as a joke, and then thought it would also be funny to make those ~wacky ridiculous things~ genuine within the story. like, that it would be funny for characters’ supposed psychosis to actually be the reality of the situation, and for captain to be biologically neither male nor female, etc. i think this is a given. and then around the time of the rewrite, i think he realized those concepts didn’t age well and attempted to fix it, not realizing that he failed so badly at making caricatures that he accidentally made a group of characters that were uniquely relatable to an underrepresented demographic and way ahead of their time. i think ive said this before but it is genuinely what i think happened
Having been Very Online in the mid 1990s is rough because half of your formative influences are like "yeah, this Flash video engages in pop culture deconstruction that's strikingly topical even thirty years later and did things to my vocabulary that persist to this day, and I can literally never recommend it to anyone because its core premise is a level of homophobic ordinarily observed only under laboratory conditions".
i think the most narratively satisfying conclusion for the original run would have been snippy genuinely accepting his new found family and settling down together and for snippy to express gratitude for it. i think the most narratively satisfying conclusion for the rewrite would be for snippy to wake up from a nap and for the others to say “infi? zero? what are you talking about? there’s no time for napping now, adventure awaits!”
im looking at the ending again in the light of day and there’s so much about it that is just terrible but i think most of that is consequence of the rewrite as a whole and not necessarily the ending itself. i know we’ve all said this a billion times but the decision to make captain frequently express fear and helplessness is probably the worst character decision that could possibly have been made. this is the last page in its entirety (content warning for rewrite-typical characterization, which feels like… gore of our comfort character)
so i do genuinely hate that the last line of dialogue is infinity. i also don’t know if the “her” is referring to captain or infi? also note the inconsistent color coding and the fact that “a single word” is never specified and i can’t tell if we’re supposed to know what it is or not. all in all at least the rewrite has been put into its grave

YESS MINE TOO maybe im predictable but ive always been a fan of the little catholic allusions throughout. the realization that pilot is both pilate and saint christopher affected me LOL. also did you know that saint christopher is sometimes depicted as a cynocephalus
romac rewrite ending spoilers As if anyone actually fucking cares about the rewrite : it really feels like he was going for a futurama ending. like. in a "ohh and then you can read from the start, timeloop-style!" way but there isn't enough to really indicate that's the case . And it's done so fucking poorly. entirely unsatisfying + no payoff for Anything that happened earlier in the comic , nothing real leading up to it , + ignoring characterization near-entirely for Doomed ""Romance"" ? (???) if that all makes any fucking sense. Who knows
ohh you may be right. i interpreted it as an attempt at integrating the other stories like “we will see each other in another life…. now click on my royal road page and see the other stories”

after the part you stopped at it does develop more of a consistent storyline and there is a genuinely really good arc later down the line (the flood arc… which is my personal favorite by a long shot and i think many others feel the same way) but shortly after that it sort of loses the plot. several years ago vitaly took down the original website and rewrote the whole thing using AI and stolen fan content, in which every character is a poorly revamped version of themselves minus basically everything that made them charming in the first place, and added a new main antagonist named Infinity who is an excuse to depict more naked women a poorly written vriska-style character who is integrated into every single part of the story and who i have genuinely never heard anyone express positive feelings about as a character or as a narrative element

in like 2014 i was so obsessed with the idea of meeting vitaly at a convention or something because of how impactful his work was for me and id be lying if i said i wouldnt still jump on that opportunity in an instant if i could. except that now i would look at him like this
