“I’ll have to check it out. Is the Boys and Girls club for humans as well or just supernatural?”

She saw the smile, and shook her head with a smile of her own coming on her face. “You wouldn’t believe how many heavies are clean freaks. Nothing better than the smell of Pinesol in the afternoon or a freshly dusted table.”

“The Boys and Girls clubs is human. There’s a few of our children who participate. They’re always looking for volunteers and people to help out in general.“

“I’m seeing it with my own two eyes and I can’t complain.“

Siobhan nodded as he spoke, having looked into it when she had originally signed up for her time. When she stepped in, she was hit with the smell of sweat and chlorine. “Is this all ran by the city, or just Clan Jackal?”

Siobhan began removing her rings and slid them into her pocket. “Hand me a mop, and let’s get started.” There was something about cleaning that always felt comforting to her. “Are we starting in here, or getting the locker rooms out of the way?”

“Clan Jackal. The cities community center is a few miles away. There’s a few parks, Boys and Girls clubs, and salvation army centers in the area if your interested.“

“You can mop, if that’s what you want, and I’ll get the ladder out to clean the windows.“ Zack said, trying to hid his smile, especially since he didn’t really see her being the mopping type. “Here seems like the best bet.“

“They broke your ribs over the color of a mailbox.” Zelda huffed and crossed her leg over the other. 

She caught the look, but hid her eye roll at it from him. “Fine.”

Instead of answering her, Zack closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

“Eh, I got all that chaotic energy out over seas.” Jin chuckled  “I can’t speak for my clan but I’ll make a suggestion on helping. Some community service could make the firefighters look good.” 

“You served? For how long?“ Zack asked, impressed. “It can. I’m sure I can have our liaison reach out to Kylo about having you guys out in uniform doing something for the kids.“

“Pleasure to meet you Zack. I’m Jin. I could say the same about you. It’s nice to put the face to the name.” Put his hand out for a firm shake  “Jackal Clan, right?”  

“The pleasure is all mines, Jin.“ Zack said, shaking Jin’s hand. “Yes and it’s not often that we get a hyena out for volunteer help unless they had something to do with destroying the places in the first place.. I’m grateful. Maybe we can start making this a thing.“

Siobhan smiled at him and shook her head. “A signing went over, but I’m here now. So point me where to go.”

“Follow me,“ Zack gestured. “I think you know this already but our community centers are non-profit and ran by a group of volunteers. Given children from low income families or those generally in need at place to hang out after school. Yes, we help with homework but we focus on keeping them entertain here and off of the street. Which bring us to...“ Zack smiled, opening the door for her. “Our recreation facilities. We have a outdoor pool, athletic and exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a track and a playground.“

“The kids are all out helping with the other programs today while we and anyone else whose running late get to play maid and clean all this up. Sadly that includes the locker rooms too.“

“I’m Zekharyah by the way. Everyone calls me Zack. I don’t think we’ve ever met officially but I have seen you around before.“

Zelda sat down and leaned back against the chair. “So we’re just supposed to let you get jumped over a stupid HOA fight and have no reaction? Seriously?”

“Why hasn’t Ellis done anything yet?”

“Zelda! Sweetie, I’m fine. I will deal with them as soon as I’m out again. You just said it yourself. It was a stupid HOA fight. Heads aren’t going to roll because of it.“

“Ellis is a big boy and knows exactly what he’s doing as the head of this clan.“ Zack sent her a disapproving look that he usually sends anyone who questions his friend and leader.

@ A Community Program

“Thanks for coming out to make our community better. But you’re running a little late? I’m afraid the only thing we have spots left for is cleaning up the recreation facilities.“

Zelda stared at her dad. “To let you sit alone in a hospital? To come out of surgery alone? How on earth could that have been the best choice?”

“To let me rest in peace and keep our daughters from worrying about me.“

Zelda stared at her dad and fluffed it one more time for good measure. “Well if you called me earlier we’d have gotten this out of the way already.”

“You’re mother and I agreed that it was for the best.“ Zack rolled his eyes but resisted the urge to cross his hand over his chest.

@The Hospital

“I just signed my release papers. Honestly, there’s no need to fluff my pillow again.“

“It’s quite alright, waking up in the hospital has that effect on people. The paramedics handed your belongings to the nurses. They should be able to get in touch.” She informed him,  “You currently have two broken ribs and a bruised lung. I know we can fix everything in one surgery. Are you ready?” She asked as they finally pulled into the operating room.

“Surgery for a broken rib? Those you’ll heal on their own...“ Zack eyes were clear with panic. “Give it to me straight doctor. Did they puncture my lung or is it something else?“

“If you want to warm up there’s a radiator under this booth,” he said by way of offering the free, and warm, seat opposite him to the person who’d just come in out of the freezing temperature outside.

Zack looked around the busy diner and took the seat offered to him. He was cold and some heat would do him and his freezing toes some good. “That’s a unexpected greeting if I’ve ever gotten one.”

“I can have a nurse call your wife, but you won’t make it out that door.” She informed him. She recognized him as one of the animal shifters leaders “The only reason you’re awake right now because of me. Do you remember what happened?” She said sternly

“Do you have her number? What’s the damage?“ Zack asked, trying and failing to reach out for his phone. If it was still in his pocket anyways. “Excuse my manners... Thank you, Dr. Rinker. It was personal clan dealing that got out of hand. We’ll deal with it in house.“

Zelda peeked out at the shades again. “I don’t know. Look at how it’s coming down.”

Zack stood up and looked out the window then back to Zelda again. “Looks like I have a few phone calls and text messages to make. Want some coco?”

Kudzai had been at work for hours. In that time she performed two appendectomies, removed a foreign object from a rectum  and assisted in reattaching three fingers. The seasoned warlock had been on her feet all day. The minute she sat down for a breather she saw nurses running like chickens with their heads cut off and her pager was going crazy. She followed the madness to the ER.

Apparently there had been some sort of accident or fight no one really gave her a clear story on what the hell happened. What she did know is that the patient in front of her was in critical condition and losing blood quickly. Running her hand down the patients arm she was able to make a more in-depth diagnosis: three broken ribs and a punctured lung. 

Without missing a beat Kudzai eased the patients pain with a quick flick off the wrists and whispering a spell as they hospital staffed rushed them to a operating room. She could see the patient slowly regaining consciousness. 

“Hello, I’m Dr. RInker. Can you tell me what happened?”

Hello, I’m Dr. RInker. Can you tell me what happened?

Zack groaned feeling a dull ache in his ribs as he tried to open his eyes. They felt heavy and stuck together. On this first try, Zack immediately closed his eyes because of the bright light. Trying again, Zack found himself successful and also in a hospital. “Rinker. Dr. Rinker. You need to call my wife and Ellis.” Zack struggled with every word but eventually got them all out. “Doc. I have a few people the to yell at. I'm not paying for the ambulance ride and I'm refusing service.”
