Secrecy

Alright I was tagged by @zelink-prompts​ to write a fic featuring a Masquerade ball and this is what I came up with!

This was originally written as a oneshot but it wouldn’t take that much convincing to get me to continue it!

The Feast of Farore was an old tradition that dated back to a time in which the noble class had difficulty reproducing. Hyrule has since relaxed it’s stance on noble marriages, but at the time it was likely due to the close family ties between noble houses. In order to facilitate the diminished reproduction of the population, the King declared the Feast of Farore to be a time in which the people of Hyrule would hide their faces and seek out extramarital unions free of repercussions in hopes it would result in pregnancies. The crisis had long since passed, but the tradition remained as an especially liberating holiday. 

Of course, Zelda was expressly banned from attending, despite being of age for years. Until her sealing powers were within reach, she was not to participate in any rite of passage her ancestors enjoyed. Thus, upon hearing the King had been called away on an inspection and would be absent during the feast, Zelda took things into her own hands.

Face To Face

Thank you @zelink-prompts for the tag! After battling midterms I have finally gotten to your wonderful prompt.

To say Princes Zelda was getting bored by being swept away by strangers in masks was an understatement. Her feet were tired, the tight corset was making her back ache, and the incessantly drab conversations she was forced to endure had caused her head to hurt long ago. Masked suitor upon masked suitor, all she wanted to do was collapse onto her bed and sleep the rest of the night away.

But this was the way things must be done, they way things were expected to be done. For the Princess to choose her future husband without at first undergoing the rigorous rituals of balls and courtship and the priority of the logical choice over the emotional one, would be to make certain that the public would cry scandal.

This ball in particular was the very first ball, where potential suitors adorned masks, so that the princess may judge her future mate regardless of superficial frivolities such as handsomeness. It was, however, obvious that beauty was to be the only thing Zelda was judged by, the princess being the only one in attendance who was not adorning a mask. Except for the royal guard who couldn’t afford to have their view obstructed by stuffy masks, the situation made Zelda feel terribly alone, and extremely seen.

a/n: hi I’m alive and I wrote this bc of a prompt that @zelink-prompts​ put out!! I thought it’d be a fun little exercise for tonight! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, so I’ve been wanting to get something out ehe. Here’s to posting at 2 AM (I apologize in advance for any typos)! Hope you enjoy!

summary: [Pre-Calamity] It’s Zelda’s 16th birthday and King Rhoam decides to throw a lavish masquerade ball in celebration. Zelda is not happy (when is she ever happy pre-calamity ;-;)

“I just simply—” Zelda grunts and winces as Impa tightens the corset around her waist, “—simply do not understand why this is such a necessary tradition!” Her fingers dig into the fabric of her vanity chair with enough force to chip her nails.

“Your Highness,” Impa starts, tying the lace, “if we start straying from such traditions, the people will begin to worry.”

Her frown deepens—she knows Impa is right, but every second she spends lolling around with trivial palace affairs, she can feel her precious time slipping away from her.

“Besides,” Impa continues, pulling Zelda’s hair back and smoothing it out, “you’ll be turning sixteen—your birthday has always been a big celebration.”

Masquerade

Princess Zelda adjusted her necklace to lay flat across her collarbone and stared down the door in front of her. Tall, dignified, royal. Just like the man she was dreading to see that night. He was egotistical, full of it, vain, and they’d been sworn enemies since the day they met when he stepped on her foot while dancing. Yet, a part of her couldn’t help but feel something—admiration? Infatuation? Attraction? She couldn’t pin a name to how she felt when she saw him, and she certainly didn’t want to.

The doors creaked open and she tried her best to look uninterested and bored. The meaner she looked, the less men that asked to dance with her. That was how she preferred it. Because of that, she was overjoyed that this time around, the ball was a masquerade, but she was disappointed at how tiny and ineffective the masks were. A glance around the room and she instantly knew who everyone was, despite what was supposed to disguise them.

Making her way across the dance floor to a table, she happily accepted a glass of champagne from a passing servant. She drummed her fingers on the clothed surface and took a sip when a man came up to her, just another suitor, and asked for her hand in dance. It was painfully obvious that everyone could tell who everyone was but, for the sake of not offending the king who’d organized the ball, they feigned ignorance. The suitor had even stuttered her name before correcting himself.

She danced with many men like that that night, all of whom she knew. They were different princes from the many different kingdoms surrounding Hyrule, each one seeking her hand and, ultimately, her kingdom’s bountiful resources. She resolved that she would never marry any of them.

Hyrule Castle didn’t do small parties.

It had to be lavish and grand, ornate and glamorous. Royal balls were expected to be nothing less of perfect, much to Zelda’s chagrin. To say that she was preoccupied was an understatement. Though it was foolish to expect her father to dash the bi-annual ball on the simple fact that Calamity Ganon was meant to resurface any day now.

Zelda simmered in place. Ah, no that was entirely on her to figure out. The court must have their ball.

The balls of her feet were on fire after being swung about the dancefloor and she very much wished they’d go numb like he bobbypin-scraped scalp. So often she had used dancing as an indulgence, but tonight she felt like a ragdoll more than a dance partner. Thick masks of all kind outwitted her attempts to identify her prospects, because of course her father wanted a masquerade to switch things up.

Seemingly to kindle the flames to her scorn a little further.

Zelda was a woman of action. Stress was a minor hurdle if she could do something about the stressor but now there was nothing to do that didn’t lack in the expectations of her many guests.

It seemed like everyone knew who she was when she could hardly recognize anyone else and it hadn’t helped that she wasn’t one to attend court. A stress sigh sat in her throat. The champion weren’t here either with the completely allowable excuse to prepare for the Calamity.

Someone was trying to make conversation with her, though it felt more like entrapment. She smiled politely and spared a quick glance over the crowd had her catching the eye - or rather mask - of one she had been looking at thrice too many times.

I would 100% wear a Lizafoe mask to any formal event.

Fun fact: I DO NOT like drawing backgrounds. Like at all. I can barely tolerate coloring stuff for the most part.
