For the Intimacy Prompts, now about #22 for Pre Calamity Zelink from Botw?
Hey, girl! Thanks for the prompt, I hope you like it ;)
“Link, it has come to my attention that our affair is lacking in a critical regard.”
He stares. Glances down at himself then raises a disbelieving brow at her.
If she doesn’t know any better, she’d say he sounds offended.
“Not you, specifically,” she clarifies, smiling and reaching out to hold his hand in reassurance. Her intention wasn’t for Link to believe that he was doing something wrong; he’s been nothing but the perfect suitor since they’ve started this secret courtship.
She should’ve worded it better, that was her fault.
“I mean about our relationship in general. Perhaps I exaggerated before. It’s not, per say, critical, but it’s something important we must address.”
He has that stoic look on his face now. Before, she would’ve dismissed it as nothing more than a blank expression from a man who’s always looking past her, and wouldn’t have given it a second thought. Now, she recognizes it for what it truly means: he’s listening and focused on every word that leaves her lips.
“I’ve been watching how other couples interact with each other, both in the castle and during our travels. Each have their own differences, but there is one thing they have in common.”
Link’s lips thin. His stomach is twisting itself in nervous knot after knot, but he’s determined not to outwardly show his anxiety. He nods curtly, urging her to continue.
What are those other men doing that he isn’t?
Has he not picked her not enough flowers? Not complimented her beauty as many times as she deserves? Were the copious amounts of specimens he hunted down not to her satisfaction?
“You see, I’ve witnessed that they all give each other…nicknames!”
Nicknames? Of all the answers his overactive mind came up with, that wasn’t one of them.
Seeing Link’s confused expression, Zelda hurriedly explains as she reaches out to hold his other hand, raising them up and meeting his eyes over them with an eager smile.
“Yes, they call each other by various nicknames! It’s a way they show affection, and I thought, why shouldn’t we do that? It’s so endearing and-”
She stops suddenly, her smile turning sheepish and apologetic.
“Unless, you’re not comfortable with that?” she asks warily. “I wouldn’t mind; we can continue addressing each other by our given names if you want.”
It takes a second for it to dawn on him, and when it does, his eyes fall to half-mast, head tilting as he gazes at her with a silly grin that can only be described as lovesick.
Nicknames, or in this case, pet names. She wants them to use pet names with each other. It’s so innocently sweet. Not even a fireproof elixir could stop him from melting.
“I don’t mind using nicknames,” he murmurs softly, pausing as he wracks his brain for a suitable one, “honey?”
The name tastes sour scraping off his tongue, and judging from Zelda’s pursed lips and puckered brows, she doesn’t like it either.
“It’s nice,” she manages, “for an old married couple. We are neither old nor married.”
Maybe one day they could be, but it’s still too early to determine something like that. Besides, there is this whole calamity thing they need to take care of first.
Link nods in agreement. The gears are turning in his mind. Something nice, but not for old married couples. Something special, something different. Something that would make her blush and smile prettily.
He grins. “That’s true, we need something better…sugarberry.”
Zelda blinks, caught off guard by that one. She’s never heard any of the other couples she observed use it. Then again, Link has seen a lot more and been to a lot more places in his seventeen years, a freedom she’s only recently been allowed due to the impending doom threatening them all.
She briefly considers it, then resolutely shakes her head. It doesn’t matter if it’s a typical nickname; it just sounds too silly for her tastes.
“No, not that one, either. It’s just…” She stops, trying to find an explanation that wouldn’t offend him, “not something I can picture myself being called.”
She perks up, giving him an encouraging smile as she adds, “But I’m sure you’ll think of something better!”
“Thank you for your faith in me, my little truffle.”
Zelda doesn’t bother to hide her disgust at that one. For Hylia’s sake, it looks like she just got a whiff of a freshly-cut hearty durian! Only the many years of knightly etiquette training ground into his brain save him from bursting out laughing.
“Okay, okay,” he acquiesces, fighting hard to keep the neutral line of his mouth steady. “Is this better, sweetcakes?”
“No, it isn’t,” she replies flatly with narrowed eyes.
“I’m sure I’ll find something you like, pudding pie.”
“I have a feeling you’re not taking this seriously.”
“Whatever would give you that idea, my delectable soufflé?”
“Forget it!” Zelda huffs, throwing down their joined hands and ripping herself from his hold.
Link uses the newfound freedom of his arms to wrap them around his middle as he bends over at the waist, roaring with laughter.
Zelda crosses her arms and scowls at him. While she is admittedly happy to see him laugh so openly—she can count the number of times it’s happened on one hand—she isn’t entirely pleased for it to be at her expense.
“I’ll come up with the nicknames myself,” she snaps, her glare sharpening on her red-faced, wheezing knight. “And why did all of yours revolve around food, anyway?!”
Link, still bent over, takes several deep breaths to answer her prior to opening his eyes. He ignores the tears gathered at the corners rolling down his cheeks as he offers her a mischievous smirk.
“Because you’re the apple of my eye.”
