i think the way other kids at anact see ivan/till va how ivan/till interact with and view others is really interesting. overall ivan + till seemed to be viewed as the "unapproachable duo" and i think thats hilarious lmfao

multiple people call ivan perfect and hard to approach, literally trying to interact with him through till (i assume the giver assumes ivan and till are besties lol- and it doesnt help that till has never actually refuted this) same with till, hes seen as cold and maybee arrogant to strangers. ("you were so loud at practice" etc etc)

neither of them are genuinely closed off- ivan seeks companionship with till and continues to even when till leaves him. he doesnt make an effort to connect with others though

till seems to have an odd complex going on in that he seeks for human company and warmth to offset the abuse and experimentation he undergoes. yes, the instinct to be in a group or not alone is inherently a survival based one, but it also reassures till that hes worth something. and even though ivans actions might be confusing to till it still means hes seen. acknowledged.

(that went off on a bit of a tangent) HOWEVER tills contrasting side is his belief thats hes better/superior. he calls other pethumans weak and that he will literally destroy them with his music (im paraphrasing and this is based off of memory someone correct me lol) this might come from the nature of his sitatuion- aka being one of the only humans to survive uraks experiments, so he believes hes physically and mentally stronger because well. no one else in anact has been confirmed to undergo the same treatment. in addition, anact systematically ranks humans. theyre trying to parce out the best of the best singers for alien stage and till is one of the top humans- hes called a genius multiple times and that likely adds to his ego

in the end till at least shows courtesy to his other classmates. when hes shown any kindness he tweaks out. his collar has some kind of disco party and when he smiles hes literally sweating.

his emotional flippancy(?) might be one of the reasons ivan likes him. till acts fundamnetally like a human and it shines through his actions and face. he has clear wants and needs, he acts in self interest and hes unapologetically expressive with his goals.

by following till obsessively ivam could mimic and eventually take on tills characteristics. he could "earn" a motive, a goal or a reason to live. a way to be human. and its till. and he devotes himself to him

Thinking about how Ivan doesn’t seem to be teasing Till here. More of a, “Oh, yeah. That definition does fit you.”

Thinking about how genuinely sad and confused Ivan looks when Ivan punches him for this response, and walks away. The way that this wouldn’t be his reaction if provocation was his intention… and the way that, even still, his expression seems somewhat blank.

The way, in fact, that Ivan’s default expression as a child, in general, is a blank one. Even many of his smiles reading as not quite reaching his eyes.

The way he’s shown to study how to make himself smile, and make other expressions… (“Before Ivan goes to his morning class, he goes to the Anakt Garden Pond and carefully observes his own facial expressions. He usually doesn't show much emotion on his face, so it's very interesting to see him scrunch up his face or break into a smile like the other kids usually do.”)

… and how that leads perfectly into him, as an adult, having changed his default expression to that of a smile.

(Including when it’s not really appropriate for him to be grinning.) (Almost as if he still doesn’t quite grasp the social situations when he should smile. Just that he should smile more often.)

I thought I should include and translate the whole part because it’s so cute. And it seems Mamo imitating Hosoyan is pretty popular too. Actually I’d planned to translate it from the start but somehow didn’t until now. They talk about how Mamo and Hosoyan did a fist bump at a Free! recording and Mamo imitates Hosoyan.

Miyano Mamoru: - I really love working with Hosoya-san. He’s amusing, and I pester him a lot.

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - Yes, you do that often! I’d also like to hear about that!

Miyano Mamoru: - But somehow, you know, Sousuke and Rin often bump their fists together in the anime, don’t they? I often get asked about that in interviews too. They ask if I have that kind of experience. And I say that really, that’s something you’d admire. Those two do it naturally, don’t they?

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - They do!

Miyano Mamoru: - Haha! And I think that’s so cool!

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - But I know about it. I saw Miyano-san and Hosoya-san, sometime at the recording, when revising or something, you bumped your fists!

Miyano Mamoru: - Haha. Yeah, I don’t know when it was but I thought that’s nice and went up to Hosoya-san and raised my fist. And then Hosoya-san bumped his fist on mine nervously, like, softly.

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - That’s cute!

Miyano Mamoru: - He did that softly, and what do you think he said? “Ah…it’s warm!” - that’s what he said. Haha!

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - And then I heard from Hosoya-san that he got to know your temperature before starting the recording.

Miyano Mamoru: - Right, right. Something like it’s cold until starting but warm after finishing the recording. It’s like “that’s it?”. But I think that somehow it’s true that you can feel something that can’t be transmitted through words. We started doing that naturally every week after that and when we do it, I feel more hyped up. And I think the distance between us shortened with that.

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - That’s really wonderful. You’re synchronized as your characters too. And like that, the best team was taking form both in the anime and among the cast. That’s Team Samezuka! I’m glad I could hear this! And I really wanted to hear your talk with Hosoya-san…

Miyano Mamoru: - “Um…Miyano-san’s hand…is warm, isn’t it?” And I was like: that’s your impression on it? “No,no…I think, Um…um,it’s important, you know… Um…um, because I’m not good at it…you know, um, I’m not good with people…So things like temperature…It’s…like a way to communicate..and…it’s important for me.”  That’s what he was saying.

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - You really sounded like him! 

Miyano Mamoru: - Hahaha!

Shimazaki Nobunaga: - Totally sounded like him! What you were saying, the way of talking and the style, you know, everything was alike so you can only say it sounded like him. Awesome. But you two often have preparatory meetings, don’t you? So this is how the recording studio is getting warmed up. Then, let’s read the next mail…
