I have an extensive back story for these two, where Mewtwo is relegated to a mentoring role in the Brawl tournament and Lucario becomes his student. They grow close, and then eventually too close, and Mewtwo’s contract is terminated for gross misconduct. The termination is messy, of course, and they spend a long time sure that he will never be allowed to Smash again. This seems to be the case at the beginning of the fourth Smash tournament… but things work out in the end ❤
