alright so during into the spider-verse's introduction to peter b. parker, we see his wedding, and he stomps on the wine glass right? this is a jewish wedding tradition, which makes this version of peter parker jewish (further confirmed in interviews -- however, i believe this is enough by itself). it's a nice nod to the jewish roots of the character.

we get to see a bunch of peter parkers throughout the spider-verse films, and none of them have any explicit religious associations like peter b. parker. except for one!

here we have gwen stacy's peter parker and aunt may, from earth-65, saying grace over a meal. from my understanding, this is generally a christian practice -- in judaism, we prefer to say short prayers before eating, and save the long, in-depth ones for afterwards. so to me, this was a clear example of the character being coded as christian. i was a little disappointed that they didn't make peter parker jewish here too, but since across the spider-verse discusses variants and the differences between instances of the same person between different universes, i interpreted this as a continued commentary on peter parker's ethnicity -- although he was initially jewish-coded and one of his two creators, stan lee, is jewish, this is often erased, especially in more modern interpretations of the character.

and then i remembered that this peter parker also literally turns into the lizard.

An hour ago I was sitting in a movie theatre, watching the climax sequence of Everything Everywhere All at Once, and for a moment, I was terrified.

“Love is the answer” is something I’ve seen over and over and over again. “Love makes life worth living” is something I’ve heard over and over and over again.

Love conquers everything. Nothing matters—except Love. Love is universal, Love is everything, Love is everywhere—all at once.

And for a moment, they’d convinced me that once again, I was going to be told I’m not human enough for them, because I don’t love in the same way.

But I was wrong. This movie grasps you not ungently by the shoulders, and says, Kindness is a choice. And Joy—joy is the answer. Joy conquers everything. Nothing matters except joy. Joy is everything, joy is everywhere, and joy can happen all at once.

This movie made me cry, because for the very first time, they did not tell me that Love is what makes life worth living.

Silly question but do you ever feel like the BNHA fandom sort of “died down”? I guess in terms of certain big-following accounts on here and Twitter no longer existing or being active. I feel like the “height” of the fandom was before the first war, when the story was solid all around and still kinda lighthearted, and the fandom seemed more “active” but not in a constantly-arguing way. Figure this happens to other series as the story wraps up, but have you noticed your fandom experience change?

I’m a late addition to anitwt so I can’t really say what happened there, but yeah I do feel a lot of people drifted away -especially towards the end of the war / post-war and also due to S5 quality issues.

(I feel like JTA was very slow and boring for the anime-onlies too and then they really didn’t do justice to either MVA nor the Endeavor internship arc imho).

So yeah, I definitely feel less discussion on Reddit and less engagement even here on Tumblr. I think there are many people who still read / watch but don’t feel emotionally engaged enough to participate in fandom.

isn’t it crazy to think how we wouldn’t even BE HERE in the 1st place (much less the next 50 years with this joke of a SCOTUS, who knows what else they’re gonna go after next) if hillary had just fucking won 2016? with the new election cycle coming up, i hope this disaster will remind people to not only show up but to not waste their votes on 3rd party “protest votes” that only hurt us and get us into shit like this. whoever leaked this is a god damn saint cause you know for sure they were hoping to save their decision for after the midterms. yes, it’s customary for the court to share different opinions drafts internally so this may not be the final say, but as if that’s any reassurance considering we’re even here to begin with.

Shit like that was made possible because of people turning out and making their votes count instead of wasting them.

Yes, years of GOP gerrymandering has rigged the EC to do exactly what you just described but do you know why it continues to work? It relies on people exactly like you to simply give up and handwave all politics so that they can continue winning in states despite never serving in those states’ best interests, outside of fake culture wars.

And do you know why dems haven’t been able to do anything despite having the oval office? It’s because we can never get shit through the House/Senate when it’s either dominated by the GOP or split too evenly (like it is now, where the split got destroyed by fake dems like Joe Manchin) And this is why the upcoming midterms are so crucial, because we need as many of those seats as possible (And again, this is why we owe a lot to heroes like Abrams who managed to earn us those seats in states we would typically lose)

And.. if it’s so important to vote, why is it so important to avoid 3rd party votes like the plague? Because in our current first-past-the-post voting system, 3rd party votes work against the majority (which can have devastating consequences for our EC.. that’s how we got Trump, despite Hillary winning the popular vote) Learn more here.

It’d be nice if we can have different methods of voting that allowed multiple parties of different ideas to run for office, like ranked choice voting. Some states are doing that now but I don’t know how much of a future it has on a federal level. What I can tell you, however, is that progressive ideas like that, and things like voter rights, EC reform, and more, will never have a fighting chance if no one shows up and votes for them.

And do you know why dems haven’t been able to do anything despite having the oval office? It’s because we can never get shit through the House/Senate when it’s either dominated by the GOP or split too evenly (like it is now, where the split got destroyed by fake dems like Joe Manchin) And this is why the upcoming midterms are so crucial, because we need as many of those seats as possible (And again, this is why we owe a lot to heroes like Abrams who managed to earn us those seats in states we would typically lose)

And.. if it’s so important to vote, why is it so important to avoid 3rd party votes like the plague? Because in our current first-past-the-post voting system, 3rd party votes work against the majority (which can have devastating consequences for our EC.. that’s how we got Trump, despite Hillary winning the popular vote) Learn more here.

It’d be nice if we can have different methods of voting that allowed multiple parties of different ideas to run for office, like ranked choice voting. Some states are doing that now but I don’t know how much of a future it has on a federal level. What I can tell you, however, is that progressive ideas like that, and things like voter rights, EC reform, and more, will never have a fighting chance if no one shows up and votes for them.
