---  Z E X I O N  S M I L E D,  a gesture that was half hidden behind his hair. Ventus didn’t seem like the type of person to leave a big mess all of the time, so he didn’t mind the possibility of an unmade bed on some days or random things scattering the floor. As long as his roommate didn’t mind, Zexion would gladly tidy the room for both of them. 

He heard the rumbling of a hungry stomach from across the room. It was a good thing he had offered Ventus his leftovers, because the poor boy sounded like he hadn’t eaten all day.

❝ O-oh, if you insist. ❞ He was a little surprised; usually he made meals for himself--delicious, healthy meals- because he liked cooking and learning new recipes. If Ventus liked to make food as well, maybe it was something they could enjoy together. (Other than doing schoolwork, they hadn’t found anything else in common.)

❝ Sometimes... it’s nice to feel looked after, ❞ he went on in a quiet voice.

--- T H E  S I L E N C E  between them was tense. Zexion’s eyes were skimming the text in his novel, although his mind was too busy worrying about whether or not he overstepped boundaries to really read anything. He hoped he hadn’t made his roommate uncomfortable with his incessant tidiness. 

When the other boy finally responded, a quick word of thanks and a brief apology, the scholar felt a wave of relief wash over him. Every advancement in their friendship was appreciated, no matter how small. 

Zexion slowly lowered his paperback, this time marking his page with a book mark and setting it aside on his desk. 

❝ I really don’t mind. Cleaning... relaxes me. ❞ He furrowed his brows, though one was hidden beneath a curtain of slate-colored hair. It wasn’t normal to feel comforted by the mundane task of cleaning, but he liked the way it kept his hands busy and occupied his time productively.

❝ Oh! Um... there’s salmon and rice in the refrigerator... if you’re hungry. It’s just leftovers but... I’d hate for it to go to waste... ❞

--- Z E X I O N  had been fortunate enough to finish his enrollment at the very last minute. He was not typically the type of person to procrastinate, but his decision to apply for an education at Twilight Town University had come about only three days before the start of the new semester. It was stressful to complete all of the paperwork and get his student loans situated, but the end result was worth the effort: he was officially enrolled in university. More importantly, he was on a new path, and a more positive one, he hoped. 

It had only been a month since then, but things were already going well for the young scholar. He was excelling in all of his classes. He had a part-time job working as an assistant to the librarian in the student library. He would even dare to say that he’d made a friend: the friendly blond boy he shared a small room with.

Ventus was pleasant company. When Zexion first moved into the dormitory, he feared what his roommate would be like. Would they party? Bring over their friends? Play loud music when he was trying to study? While all of these worries had plagued his mind, he was relieved to find that Ventus was a completely suitable roommate who did none of those things.

But Zexion, who had never really gotten the hang of socializing with others, was still nervous about the newly-built friendship. He didn’t talk much, and when he did, he thought very hard about what he was going to say. 

For instance:

On a chilly February evening, when Ventus returned from his night class, his bed had been neatly made with perfect hospital-corner sheets and his extra blankets stacked neatly at the foot of his bunk. Zexion was sitting at his desk, nose buried in the pages of a book, but he lowered it as soon as his roommate opened the door.

❝ Ventus... welcome home. I hope you don’t mind, but I made your bed. It was no problem but... please let me know if you’d rather me not touch your things. ❞ 

Then he lifted his book back to eye-level, almost hesitant to see the other’s reaction to his tidiness.
