Going through my drafts, I thought I’d post the barely-coherent ramblings I did like a year ago. I have no memory of writing any of these lol
I’m in love with the idea that Neil has some habits and mannerisms because of how he grew up “quicker”, and in a unsocial environment. As Neil gets more comfortable, the foxes slowly pick up on them over time.
Chewing on the sleeves and collars of shirts for example. Something Mary didn’t like, so he tends to do it when he’s alone, but it’s obvious because of the soaked, rumpled, and sometimes hole filled, shirts.
In a similar vein, biting at his nails, the skin around his nails, the inside of his cheek, his lips, etc.
What was I even talking about 😭 this is so infantilizing
Andrew Minyard is a theatre kid
I may be over thinking this… but one of my favourite things about Neil and Andrew’s dynamic is that Andrew is not the exact opposite of Neil’s traumas.
Maybe it’s specific to the genre, but I read a lot of fantasy romance books where the main characters love interest always has the exact opposite aesthetics or traits then the person/s that hurt them. A prime example being Rhys vs Tamlin in ACOTAR, but there are many others where there is so much emphasis put on the differences between the people that hurt MC and the person that’s accepted them.
Andrew however, isn’t so different from Neil’s demons on the surface. He uses knives like Neil’s father, he wears black like the Ravens, he smokes like Neil’s mother did, his personality was similar to that of Lola’s and Riko’s when he was on drugs- off of them, he was similar to what I (personally) imagined Mary to be. (And by similar I don’t mean like the exact same, just, well… similar)
