(The scene opens on DELANEY cleaning her mom’s house.)
DELANEY (Talking to herself)
Okay...frozen pizza in the oven, check. Guest bedroom set up, check. Charming throwback playlist…
(She uses her phone to play early 2000s music on the living room speaker.)
(There’s a knock at the door. She runs to answer it.)
I brought cookies. I couldn’t remember what kind you liked, so I just bought a few smaller packs.
Bullshit. I told him you like chocolate chip. He just got the variety pack so he could get the kind he likes.
I’m fine with anything. Thank you for this, though.
(Logan & Gianna head towards the couch)
It looks just like I remember.
Oh my god. Remember when your mom would have us put all our sleeping bags out here to make sure she could keep an eye on Logan?
She really thought he was going to try something.
She really thought we were going to let him.
That was actually really sad.
That she didn’t like me, just because I’m a guy.
She liked you enough. She even gave you hugs sometimes. It’s just the, like--maternal instinct, I guess? I don’t know.
Besides, what matters is that we all knew that feelings and dating and just--all that stupid shit would never get in the way.
(She heads toward the oven. On the couch, Gianna and Logan whisper.)
So I’ve been thinking these past few minutes...and you know what? Maybe tonight isn’t the night. Maybe we should just...you know, take this time to enjoy each other’s company.
I’m not backing out, just...maybe we can do it later. Like in a couple days?
So, we drop the bomb, then fuck off back to Boston? Great plan. Sounds really humanistic, I’d say.
It’s not the right time. She’s going to hear us bragging about college all night tonight--
But we’re not bragging. We’re just talking--
But that’s how she’s going to take it. We can’t drop all this information on her at once.
This is why I wanted to just keep everything low-key. Telling everyone makes things ten thousand times more complicated.
If you want something serious, that’s not possible.
Exactly, so we’re telling her tonight.
(Delaney returns, setting the pizza on the table.)
Telling your mom that she didn’t have anything to worry about. Just rubbing it in her face, ya know?
Well, we’re all adults here. We don’t need to do that.
Yeah. I mean, she is letting us stay the night here. You don’t always get to relive your high school years.
Unless you never go off to college. Then you get to do it all the time
(Gianna shoots him a look. Delaney is visibly hurt by this)
Not that there’s anything wrong with that...I don’t mean that it’s bad--I’ll shut up.
It’s no big deal. I’ll be joining you guys over there in no time. Just another few semesters…
And that’s going to be so fun...you’ll love BU.
It was kind of a stressful drive.
Did something happen? Do you need to talk about anything?
Yeah...yeah. There is something we haven’t really told you about that we probably should. Logan almost hit somebody on the way over here. Pretty terrifying
Well, yeah. You should’ve driven. You know how Logan gets.
How does Logan get, exactly?
But it’s justifiable, right?
Well, you guys have problems, too. So what if I get “aggressive” sometimes? At least that’s authentic. It’s real emotion. At least I’m not--you know vengeful or anything. I’m not a liar. I’m not pretentious. There are worse things you can be.
I’m driving on the way back, though. For sure.
Oh, for sure. (She gets up to make a trip back to the kitchen.) By the way, I know you’re dating. I could tell when you walked in the door.
I’m not happy about it, but it’s not the worst thing.
Why didn’t you say anything?
It was kind of fun to watch you guys suffer. (She shrugs.) Who wants cookies?
