From Writing Prompt #68 - prompts and circumstance
“I, uh…there’s not a good answer to that really…”
“Okay, then where are you trying to go?”
“That’s a good question, and a very long story.”
“Dammit if I’m giving you a ride I need to know something, is anything not complicated with you?”
“…My favorite food? ”
She arches an eyebrow at me.
“It’s nightmares.”
She starts at me until the light changes. Not in a horrified or disbelieving way, just… observing.
The light turns green and we roll forward.
“Alright, anything else?”
It’s my turn to stare. I told her I ate nightmares, she believed my and didn’t start freaking out. She’s either very brave or very stupid, though I should have figured that when she picked up a hitchhiker. Maybe she knew what she was doing. Unexpectedness seemed to be what she did best.
Topping out at, at most, 5'2 her bleach blond hair was streaked in pink and emphasised the tomboy cut. She wore sports shorts and a Skyrim tee. Her bag was a book bag covered in pins ranging from “party girl” to “books are fun”. On top of this, she was a truck driver.
And then theirs her calm, almost royal, air. A quite inquisitiveness that was rare in today’s society.
“I need to know when to let you off”
“You’ll know.”
I sadly look up, we’re almost at the interstate.
She turns to me “why don’t I have any kind of instinct about-”
And slams into a minivan.
She flys out of the wind shield. I step out and make my way through the pile up. She’s on the side of the road, blood polling from a cut on her wrist and out of her mouth. I kneel beside her head as she gasps for breath, something’s broken inside of her.
I lean over her and she looks into my eyes.
“You did this?” She gurgles out. It’s only half question. I nod. She coughs up more blood. I lean closer and she manages to whisper.
I kiss her forehead and all her nightmares flow out to feed me. This was the hardest one yet.
