I was thinking about drawing something Red Hood related again since drawing him gives me the happy chems, then suddenly I thought about doing a painting since it's been a while since I did stuff in that style. Usually when I do paintings I like to reference classic works (I did some Leyendecker before and a few Da Vinci sculptures to practice). I suddenly remembered 2 of my favorite paintings: Saturn Devouring His Son by Goya and Ivan the terrible and His Son by Ilya Repin. And the latter was an INSANE Jaybin and Bruce Wayne parallel, so here it is hehe.
This painting is from Bruce's perspective on the events that killed Jaybin. When painting it I wondered what did he felt when he knew he was too late to save his son? Does the sensation of his son's cold limp body haunt him to this very day? For a moment he thought that he killed him, he was the one that gave the mantel of Robin to Jason. Back then he vowed to never take another child as Robin but his selfishness, his only wish of wanting a family he took Jason in anyways. Because Jason was similar to him, not to Batman but to the young Bruce. The one before his parents was taken from him. The one who looks out at the world in wonder. He yearns to protect him, to show the world he is not the same kid that cried when his parents were killed, he can protect him now. So I wonder, in the aftermath of it all. When Bruce Wayne saw his son again. Angry, vengeance ridden, and lashing out but very much alive and not bloodied and burnt. Did he remember the rubble, the angry flames behind them? The day he lost him, the day he had to arrange his first funeral in the family? Or did he see himself in the poor undead child?
