Replacement Review - Private I
In looking over my cumulative class blogs, I realised the absence of my review of a previous year’s proposal.
Not sure what happened, it was all so long ago when I was new to Tumblr! Anyway, here’s a short replacement, attempted to be written from the perspective of someone who’s not just completed their own proposal.
I chose, at random, PROJECT EXAMPLE 4 – Private-I.
It was both interesting and warming to know that people throughout the years, ours included, are so interested in making apps and games that are designed to both entertain and educate. We seem to collectively be saying that it is no longer enough to simply entertain, especially when this new medium is available to us, one which has the real capacity for change and social good. Improving people’s lives through fun and leisure is an opportunity we won’t ignore.
This right away was a positive for me when looking at Private-I. The National Trust and Historic Scotland are organisations near essential to the cultural growth of Scotland. Essential to maintaining and protecting the natural landscape, a task they can only succeed in with the help of the people, educated people.
Secondly, I found it interesting that it combines the real world with the virtual world. VR being something that this time around, so far, has not gone away and seems to be making real breakthroughs in becoming an everyday item in our lives.
The proposal was easy to read and easy to visualise. The use of simple, popular comparisons helps in this regard. For instance, game mechanics could be complicated with a limited number of words to explain, so saying “It’s like the classic board game, Guess Who but with…” is a simple shorthand way to help us understand how it will play.
Finally, that its primary target is younger people and people who love History, hopefully, through apps like this, that will eventually mean everybody!
I don’t have an iPhone though, so not me. 😊
Smart bus stops and virtual hospitals are all part of Singapore's smart plans but what do citizens think?
Countabike will be much more fun than this!
You wanna talk procrastination? How about this blu-tack fry-up?
Tumblr told me off.
Inbox this morning, message from Tumblr; Mark, where have you been?! (interrobang need, right there) It was early, I hadn’t slept, I think I told it to fuck off. And yet, it had a point. Where had I been? After the crescendo of the pitches and then straight into super busy end of trimester hand ins, it became obvious how easy it is to fall out of interacting online. Countabike proposal is in full flow which should be, and is my focus, but as we’ve learned elsewhere lines of communication and connections are important, essential actually.
Over the last three months I’ve discovered the value and variation of interactive media and want to get all I can from it in the years to come but I guess the clue’s in the title, interactive. And that’s up to me.
Last one before the pitch.
Feels like the first solo project blog in a while, and even this one is short. I was just thinking as to why that might be?
With my first idea which changed and changed again I was unsure, not super enthused and wary as to how to proceed with the particular details of my ‘choose your own adventure story’, and yet I blogged quite regularly.
Honestly, I’m wondering if this was a way to feel a sense of accomplishment without having accomplished much? A way of saying I’d worked on my project that day, when my project hadn’t developed much at all?
I suppose it’s all part of the natural development of an idea, how it will change and build from start to finish, but still.
So, I can sort of feel OK about not blogging as much… because I’ve actually been doing it, for real, and enjoying it.
Good luck tomorrow all!

Deep into R&D for Countabike, I keep coming across cycling related articles and new technologies that tie-in with what I’m trying to do with Countabike regarding a more efficient, easy to navigate/enjoy city space.
This was one of my favs.
Just a quickie
Group presentations today, and a lot to think about for solo pitching. Key questions, what is it, how will it work, who will want it?
Like with Flat Broke, I hope Countabike will be multipurpose.
Fun but useful.
A way to kill time, but with a purpose.
Statistics and data which to the player is cause for competition and celebration and improvement... if we just sit here and play one. more. time.
For those in charge of running our cities, statistics and data which provide invaluable information, allowing them to make better informed decisions.
Time to design/imagine how the UI will look, how exactly will data be recorded, and who, if anyone would be interested in it?
Countabike.
TITLE: Countabike
PLATFORM: Mobile
STRAP-LINE: If you enjoy the city and watching the world go by, Countabike is for you. A game that is great fun for the player but also records real world data for city leaders to make the movement of traffic and people safer and more efficient.
Okay, so the strap-line is little dry sounding, I know what it is, now I have to make it appealing and exciting to someone who might think about downloading it.
Countabike by the way is a game my wife, Alison and I invented in Amsterdam, in fact, she’s watching me right now, wondering if she’s been correctly credited. We think it’s fun, and it now seems an ideal combination of fun, people watching, mobile gaming, gamification and improving the city for both inhabitants and visitors, whichever method of transport they use, but particularly cyclists. Just a pleasant and useful way to spend half an hour in a city environment.
Things to now consider and develop: How will the game look? Why will you want to play again? What are the practicalities of its necessary features, gps, wi-fi, camera? How will the experience be different (or even possible) from city to city?
More to follow...
Nothing says you’re 100% committed to your new idea like purchasing a domain name.
TITLE: Just give up. PLATFORM: Smartphone/Tablet. TAGLINE: The only thing you have control over, is giving up. A classic 'choose your own' adventure, or maybe it's a 'let fate decide your own' adventure, or possibly a 'let a complete stranger decide your own' adventure, even a 'you don't get to choose anything' adventure. And if none of those work out for you... Just give up.
Let’s do this shit...
Solo Project latest
Just a quick word on my solo project, breakdown of recent class sessions to follow…
Working out the story and the story threads, that’s basically how my time is spent now. I feel I’ve got a fairly well established single thread, now I’m on the mechanics of ‘the wrong turns’ and the decisions with dire consequences.
It’s difficult to describe, so I thought the best way was with a picture, a picture I saw a few weeks ago, that has really helped me visualise the story systems. With a central line running from start to finish and multiple lines branching off, taking the player all sorts of ways, each with its own characteristics and meanings. Each with its own checkpoints and plot points and stops and decisions.
The picture has nothing to do with the story, but I think you’ll see what I’m getting at…
