Life update: Autism diagnosis!!
Ive been on a brief break from going on Tumblr mostly due to classes starting, but I’ve also been busy with working on the process of getting diagnosed with autism. I was really anxious because I was scared I wouldn’t get diagnosed, but I recently got the confirmation after the tests that I am autistic!! To celebrate I made this drawing of one of my favorite autistic character headcanons, Zuko :D
It has been a long journey to getting this diagnosis, but it was worth it. It has helped me understand myself so much better, and has helped me find an amazing community of people who also understand. If anyone has any questions about autism or my experience, I’d be happy to talk about it too!! :)
i just think sokka growing taller than zuko is smth that can be so personal (also yes zuko scar is on the wrong side i flipped the canvas part way through and didn’t know until it was too late😭)
Zuko: Crushes are the worst.
Sokka: Yeah. Whenever I’m near someone I have a crush on, I start acting stupid.
Zuko: You’re always acting stupid.
Sokka: Yeah, don’t think about that too hard.
Lol I made it a comic

Hi there, I'm happy you were able to be diagnosed! On the topic of autism, I was wondering if you could talk about how you first realized you were autistic. I'm asking since I have a strong feeling that I'm autistic and I think it might be beneficial to ask others about their experiences. I was also wondering how being autistic affects you in your everyday life, if you're comfortable sharing that is.
Hi!
Its kind of funny, but the first sign that I considered I might be autistic is food. I was watching a video about a late-diagnosed autistic woman (which has since been deleted sadly), and she talked about how she ate the same thing over and over again. This stuck out to me, because I definitely do the same thing lolll. She also talked about other stuff that I related to, like special interests and difficulty with social cues. Once I started realizing similarities, I examined what I was like as a child and it became extremely obvious!!
As for how autism affects my daily life, it has impeded my life a lot less in the past years! After high school, I worked a food service job that was really hard (customer service is hell even for neurotypical ppl, but its double for autistics loll), but after working that job I was a lot more independent and able to mask with other neurotypicals. I still have social anxiety, and I definitely say the wrong things a lot. Sometimes people will say something that I dont know how to respond to, which can be awkward. I also still live at home with my parents, which is somewhat common among autistic people.
I also have my special interests, which affects my life but in a good way! They bring me a lot of joy, and are one of the best parts of being autistic :D
I hope this helped in some way!! If you want to talk more about it, feel free to message me <3<3
Hi, i love your blog and i saw that you recently got diagnosed, congrats!!!! I wanted to ask if you could talk about some key experiences of yours that made you suspect that you were autistic?? For about a year I've been thinking i have adhd and for some months now that i might be on the spectrum, but as a girl who has a lot of ableist views around me it's hard to clearly see if what I experience is "enough", you know?? (I understand if you don't respond due to it being a personal thing tho)
Yeah!
There are a lot of key experiences that really made it clear I was autistic, and a lot of them happened when I was younger before I knew how to mask.
For example, I remember once I was talking with one of my classmates about their favorite book. I didn’t like the book, so I said my opinion very bluntly. I remember she got mad at me, and I was confused because I just shared my opinion. Now that I know how to mask, I know that its considered rude to say your negative opinion of something that clearly meant a lot to my classmate, I should have just kept it to myself. This type of social understanding is something that I had to consciously learn, and it even took me until high school before I started to learn some of these social cues. Neurotypical people learn this social stuff through their normal development much younger, and more naturally.
As for if what you experience is “enough”, I would recommend thinking about how your experiences affect your daily life. Part of the DSM criteria wording is “persistent deficits” in social areas, so it basically has to affect your life pretty regularly. If you occasionally have an awkward conversation but don’t experience other criteria of autism, then its probably not autism. However, if you identify with a lot of the criteria, then consider talking to a psychologist!
Hope this helps, I completely understand what you are going through!! <3<3

hey i'd be really grateful if you talked at all about the process of getting an autism diagnosis because i really want to do that uhhhhh i tried talking about it with my therapist and he asked me why i would seek a diagnosis and i couldn't articulate an answer so if you could talk about what that process was like for you and how you would answer that question that would be really cool thank you
Yeah for sure! (Disclaimer: this is based off of my experiences in the United States, specifically California)
Getting a diagnosis can be important for multiple reasons:
Resources- there are disability departments at schools and universities that can give time extensions on tests, recording lecture accommodations, etc. You can also get accommodations in your job as well. And I haven't done much research into this, but it seems like there are scholarships for autistic individuals going into college!!
Validation- this is kind of hard to articulate, but especially as an autistic woman who masks a lot, sometimes it felt like I was “faking”? Like I can do well in certain social situations, I have close friends, I was even complemented by my current employer for my interview skills. Things like this made me feel like the difficulties I faced were not “enough” to be autistic, and that I was just making it up in my head. But after talking to a licensed professional, she agreed that what I feel was real and valid. She also helped me realize that I was struggling more than I realized, its just years of masking that hid my struggles. Even a psychologist diagnosing you is not necessary to be validly autistic, because there are a lot of issues with the diagnosis process, it just felt good in my experience.
Understanding- knowing that you have a developmental disorder can help contextualize a lot of childhood experiences, and in turn can help continuing to understand yourself and your limits.
As for the process of getting diagnosed, I was really lucky in that there was a female psychologist in my city who does autism diagnoses. I talked with her over the phone for a bit, and we set up an appointment time (which I hated lolll I hate phone calls)
I did an interview over zoom with her and my parents, and we talked about my childhood and early development. I also did a verbal IQ test, which was mostly just vocab. Then a few days later I came into her office in person (obviously with a lot of precautions) and I did some weird tests with children books and toys. They were obviously meant for kids, but they seem to be standard for the assessment lol. For example, she gave me a picture book with no words and I had to explain what was happening. Apparently I gave very “factual” answers without much focus on the emotions of the characters, which was a factor towards my diagnosis. Then I answered a bunch of questions about my life. Overall, each session was roughly 1.5 hours.
Hope this helps, good luck! If you ever want to talk more about this, message me and I would love to talk more in depth(≧◡≦) ♡
